Metallic tasting water

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, I was sleeved 2/7/17 and have had a bumpy ride throughout my post-op journey. I remember reading other people having changes in their tastes following surgery and that seems to be happening to me. Prior to surgery, I LOVED Water - drank it all day, every day, with no problems. Now, any water I try, tastes like I'm swilling pure metal. Doesn't matter if I try tap or bottled, different brands, etc. The only way to hide it is to mix in crystal light or other artificial sweeteners but I still feel like all I'm drinking are chemicals (albeit slightly better tasting ones now).

For anyone out there who has experienced this, was the change permanent or did water eventually go back to tasting the way it should? I'm missing water more than pizza at the moment and that wasn't a problem I really prepared myself to deal with pre-op

Most of us have trouble drinking Water post op. Some say it has to do with the ph. For a few months it's best to flavor it. Get some crystal light powder or ice tea. It doesn't have to be much but it really helps so you can meet your fluid goals.

It does get easier. I think I was around 3 months when I could easily drink a bottle like I could precisely surgery, although I still at 6 months prefer to flavor it.

I had surgery the same date. Have struggled a bit as well. Everything tastes different! Not in a good way. I have been using mixers and drinking Powerade zero for fluids. Doesn't taste good, but have to choke it down. I think the taste change will change again in time.

It's so weird how this affects everyone different. Prior to surgery I was the opposite. I LOVED my Crystal Light (well, the Walmart equivalent at least) and would drink at least a gallon a day. Now though I found myself getting bored with flavors quickly. I now prefer plain Water to the flavored stuff. I'm still drinking Propel and Powerade Zero to help mix things up. Looking forward to things getting back to normal as well.

I had a similar experience with a metallic taste about 2 weeks post-op. Turns out I had a case of thrush on my tongue causing it. I was told it can happen post-op after extended time on a straight liquid diet. I was treated and it went away within a couple of days.

I had this... Any liquid made my stomach hurt and didnt taste right for months and months. I'm finally at a point where I love the taste of Water again and can meet/exceed my fluid goals daily. I'm 8 months now so trust it gets waaaaay better when the body heals itself!

I experienced the same thing. I used to love Water but it tastes metallic to me as well . Drinking crystal light until I can stand plain water. Good to see from vets that it gets better. I'm 4 weeks out, and doing great even though I had a terrible complication as my bowel was incurred by a faulty instrument! Had to have a second surgery to get all the bile out!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
