Stupid Question, but oh well, I'll still ask...

Recommended Posts

My surgeon doesn't even do the pureed phase unless a particular patient has an individual need for it. She says that if your teeth work well, you don't need to blend soft food. LOL.

I like the fork test. I went for foods of the mashed potato consistency (not actual mashed potatoes, just that consistency) at first. My instructions were to start with the softest and moistest foods first, and make sure they were settling OK before working my way slowly up to the firmer/drier foods.

My doc also said that lots of her patients don't tolerate eggs well during this phase, and if that happened not to worry, just to hold off on the eggs until after soft/moist meats like roasted chicken were sitting well and then try them again. And that's exactly what happened. Eggs were a no-go with my sleeve, but after chicken was working OK tried them again and they were fine. :)

Good questions...my surgeon called this the soft foods phase. I haven't puréed anything. I eat the ricotta bake (truly delicious), refried Beans, scrambled eggs, and lentil Soup. At first, the only meat I could have was baby shrimp. Now I can have flaky white fish, crab, scallops, and tuna. So I've found good recipes for crab dip, crab cakes, Parmesan tilapia...all good. I highly recommend checking Pinterest for ideas. It's strange that some folks are eating spicy things like salsa and Taco Bell sauce. My doc was scared just to let me use black pepper on anything. Told me to go easy on that or anything other spice. Anyway, good luck. The soft foods phase isn't too bad. Then again eggs and Beans are two of my favorites anyway, so it wasn't so bad.

Never hurts to ask anything on here, that is what we are is support for each other. I agree with high functioning fat man on all. Good luck with everything. You can check your list or with dr office, but one of things that helped me a lot too was sugar-free popsicles (box of grape, cherry & orange) but have to be ones that were 15 calories each. Helped because could feel like chewed something but was still ok cause popsicle is just frozen liquid so your good. Good luck with upcoming surgery.

Better to ask than to jack up your healing process. Your questions did make me chuckle though. Good luck

Don't need to feel like that. We support each other here. You don't need to use a blender. You should be able to mash everything with the fork. Good luck!!

Not stupid at all very smart to ask . We all went through this and no way do any of us want to mess it up. But yes it does give a chuckle because I went through the same thoughts. Remember never over due the volume of what you consume. That uncomfortable feeling is to much . At least that is the way I was . You can still over eat after you heal . Good luck

Glad you think about it and don't skip something that could be important. You are getting to the chew, chew, chew phase and that will take the place of your blender. Just know those of us that snicker only do so because we have been there!

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
