December sleeves 2016

Recommended Posts

Does everyone who has the sleeve get the drain? I will be having surgery next month and I feel like there is so much I still don't know. I Want to be prepared on what to expect. I ask the nurse at my app. But she says the doc will talk to me before surgery. I am an anxious person so I really want to know the things to expect now, and not the day of.

No everyone does not get a drain. That is Surgeons preference. I had one...I hated it! It slowed me down. Make a list of questions and take them with you. Get them answered before surgery date...even if you have to set an appointment. I was very fortunate in my surgeons nurse was super helpful in answering all my craziness. And believe me there were tons of crazy questions!

Thank u so much I appreciate your response. I really don't want to have the drain. I literally just found out that they put the tube down your throat when u are under and that freaked me out. I have had surgery before but no tube. U just wore a mask. It's little details like that, that I want to be prepared for.

I was sleeved and had a hiatal hernia repair on 12/7 and went home the next night. I had a LOT of pain the first night and had to receive Demerol injections in my IV. The pain was from the hernia repair and not from the sleeve. I had four incisions with the biggest and most sore being in my belly button. I was given liquid hydrocodone to take home for pain and that has worked well. The gas and bloating has been bothersome but not horrible. I chew gas x chewable often and walking helps tremendously. The first day I could not sip more than 2 ounces at a time but today, 6 days later, I am able to sip about 4. I am not hungry at all, but I have had some cravings just seeing and smelling food that my husband and children are eating. I actually feel very full just having 32 to 40 ounces of liquid a day. It is amazing. I am down 8 pounds in 6 days!

And I did not have a drain. I think the pain would have been very minimal if I had not needed the hiatal hernia repair.

Sleeved December 9th!

Surgery at 930am

Home that night 730pm

I am down 13 lbs to date.

First few days struggled with the gas but it has subsided i am walking 20 mins a day which helped a lot with the gas.

I am on liquids with Protein shake and broth being key contributors.

No pain just some discomfort I am able to sleep on my side through the night now which is a huge help.

I know this will be a long journey and i have to take it slow just hope i dont get in my own way.

I have had my sleeve gastrectomy yesterday 13/12/16. I went at 1445 woke up around 1730. had severe belching and burping feeling on waking up. but was controlled. I was allowed to have sips of Water immediately post op.

Now it is D1 post op. still have the pain and cramps of stomach when i drink sips of water/apple juice.

I have had apparently Hiatus hernia needed repair as well.

I'm still in the hospital and will be for more day to check hydration status before discharge.

didn't try any Protein or anything other than Water. they are still running Fluid IV.

I get 6hourly morphine and paracetamol oral. plus dexamethasone (steroid) to reduce stomach swelling! and PPI for acid reduction.

I'm having burping pain and hiccups badly but otherwise incisional and surgical pain is ok.

Surgery was 12/1/16. Haven't weighed myself since 1 week follow up where I was down 5lbs. Discouraged today, getting sick of liquids, I miss having meals and I'm getting a lot of reflux. Not hungry at all. It's a struggle to get in the Water and Protein every day. Returned to working high stress job three days ago. Thankfully, no more pain. Emotional impact is kicking in though...I think it's the stress from job and family and can't use food for comfort now.

I got my sleeve on the 5th. I had to get a cocktail for anxiety because I was sooo nervous as this was my first surgery. I honestly don't remember anything after that until I woke up in my private room. I was in so much pain, I know it's different for everyone but man it hurt. Everyone said it wouldn't be to bad, for me I couldn't get up and walk around on the first day like I was supposed to. I took it slow and I stayed in the hospital until I felt comfortable. I went home on the 8th or 9th I can't remember. I still take liquid codeine for pain management when I need it.

Mine was done 12/7. Down 20 pounds. Like what??? I am healing. I have a desk job so I went back to half days. That has been stressful. I went and got weight loss surgery for dummies from the library. It has been helpful. I don't get the same full feeling I got before. Weird. Tired but not overly. Checking to make sure my Vitamins are up to par. Any total liquid vitamins that fit the bill?

I took off until 1/31 I have a desk job too but I just wanted to take as much time as I could off. I'm glad I did too because I'm having a lot of trouble adapting. I'll really need to pick up that book. I've seen it mentioned here a couple of times.

I had mine on the 13th. Went home on yesterday the 16th because of a hernia repair. Hardly no pain, just some incisional discomfort. Short of breath when I'm walking but that's getting better because of the gas and air coming out. No nausea, thank God! Just remember to stay hydrated

I got sleeved on the 9th. I was remarkably calm, so no cocktail. I remember joking with the nurses and hearing 'Papa was a Rolling Stone" when they rolled me into the OR. The last thing I remembered how cold it was in there as they started prepping me. Anyway, other than some nauseous the first couple days, I've been doing great! I stopped needing medication on day 5.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
