watching a video of the surgery should be required!

Recommended Posts

I think part of the pre-op requirements should include watching the actual surgery. I honestly believe some folks may not have a clue what was actually done to their insides. I see so many posts from early post-ops saying they are having trouble sticking to their "post-op diet" and have "cheated"............I don't think these folks understand it's not a diet it's a prescription! I don't think they understand that they are risking their lives by eating solid foods too soon....I get the feeling that they think when they eat something that's not on their plan they just think it will slow down their weight loss...........not that it may kill them!!!...........okay I just had to get that off my chest! End of rant!

My surgeon did require this. He has you sit down and watch it at your final pre-op appointment. I had actually already watched several YouTube videos beforehand because I was curious so it was repetitive for me, but no harm done.

I agree about the video, but only if the patient wants to see it. I think it should be a video of your surgeon performing the surgery that you are going to have.

I'd rather read material that doesn't have blood involved... which I did, I researched a lot of material that showed what was done and that should be required. *nods*

I'm a nurse, and love watching surgery, so I was fascinated by the surgery videos (my favorite is the 360 one by the guy in Mexico) but for many people that is vomit inducing. I agree that many people don't seem to understand how big the surgery is on the inside because all they see are the tiny incisions. I don't know that forcing people to watch something that turns their stomach is the answer, but I agree that more information is needed.

I've been saying this for a while especially because so many people don't seem to have the slightest concept of what is actually done to create their sleeve and what the staple line is like.

Yes I looked at the surgery on the Internet. So I had an idea of was up. I think some people think they can have this surgery and not take responsibility for their eating habits. This surgery is not for the faint of heart. U still got to work your skills. Eating is a lifetime time. It's a learning experience. It takes strength to still get up from table. To say no to the cake and yes to the gym. This is a tool. You still got use this tool correctly.

Watching the videos was mandated by my program.

Good call on their part.

My 13 year old watched a video of a DS surgery so that she could better understand what I would be dealing with. She also learned about proper eating after DS with me and would remind me to drink or eat Protein. (not that I really needed her to remind me, but she wants her mama to be healthy and successful).

Watching the surgery video might cut it down on the number of people who post here everyday asking if they can eat sausage, bacon, steak, nachos or a full thanksgiving dinner three days post op.

Though my current favourite question is...how long will I have to wait 30 minutes after eating to drink?..

Yes all of this is normal at 3 days post op. My stomach still make weird noises and I'm a little over 6 months post op. As far as the indigestion most doctors put you on a PPI for a period of time after surgery, so if you're not taking something for stomach acid you probably should ask your doctor to give you something for it... I hope this helps.

Good luck to you!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
