All happening so quickly!

Sooo I finally decided I need help because all I do is gain no matter how hard I try!

Called Smartshape for the Lap Band procedure 2 weeks ago, did an on the phone consultation with the doctor last week and was approved for financing (with the help of my hubby cosigning <3) about 2 days ago!

My procedure has been booked for October 4th 2016!!!! 22 days from now, how crazy :)

I keep reading how insurances are making people do a diet for 6 months before being approved?? What's up with that? Maybe different in Canada from other places but that sounds ridiculous. So happy it's all happening so fast because once my mind is set, I want it now!!

I had to do the 6 month visits and the annoying part was my monthly visits were a 45min drive. My Dr recommended me to weight watchers though and I actually did really well! She kept me in check with my goals and I lost 40# in those 6 months :) I'm scheduled for October 3rd now! Which is faster than I thought as well

Have you checked out other options? I see so many band revisions it scared me away from it! Just make sure you do plenty of research (not just with the center doing your band.) and good luck!!!!

Congratulations.... Hope you love your-band as much as I adore mine. It is over 9 years post op and my life is wonderful weight wise....

FYI There are some who are not in favor of being banded. You will probably hear from them and others who had problems.

Hi Julie,

This was not about me not being in favor of banding. It was more the title of the thread- I just wanted to make sure options were looked at and researched. I wouldn't advise anyone (for any type of WLS) to jump in too fast without knowing the pros and cons of all surgeries.

Congrats on your long standing band an weight loss! I wish you the best.

Thanks everyone!! I didn't do much research with the financing but as far as the band goes, my fiancé and his mother have them and I've research the band itself and knew it was exactly what I wanted. as soon as I got a good paying job, I called :)

Was banded 2 1/2 years ago. Lost 92 lbs in 6 months. Had to put back 15 lb as Dr. said I was
oo thin. You usually go on a liquid diet before surgery to shrink the liver as it has to be held out of the way during surgery. The smaller the liver the better. I have had no problems with the band. The band is not a magic solution as you can defeat it or any other bariatric option. You have to make a life time commitment to follow what you eat. There is no occasional beer or piece of cake. You have to keep track of what you eat at each meal. Till today I weigh everything before I cook it. I recommend My Fitness Pal app. to keep track. I wish you well.

Great, thanks for the tip. I already use fitness pal, it's a great tool to make sure I don't over it. Didn't know about the liver thing though!

@@futureskinnybtch congratulations! So happy for you. I love my band. My advice is to follow instructions to the 'T' and keep all your appointments -- in the first year the regular visits and eventual fills are where it is at so you can achieve the Green Zone. The links below in my signature are ones that really helped me understand how the band works and how to work the band. Best wishes with all! You are on your way.

I am not trying to be negative in any sort of way. I'm so happy for you and wish you all the best. As for myself , I had the band five years ago to the day and I can say that it is the worst decision I ever made in my life. I wish I had gotten gastric bypass to begin with. My quality of life is limited due to always being in pain and constant complications from the band. It was never the tool for me it was supposed to be. I've had all Fluid removed and still feel so horrible. I had to resort to eating foods that slide this I've gained all weight back and then some from severe depression. I would advise against Lapland. I think it's horrible they even still allow this procedure. Please do your research. I wish I had.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
