Gastric Band or Plication?

Recommended Posts

Hi, which has a better success rate long term, the band or Plication?

I have an appointment with a consultant about having a band done in a few weeks but am concerned about something going wrong, slippage etc many years down the line

How does Plication weight loss compare over the years, can it be stretched and lose restriction or are there any other complications that any one has had with Plication

Any advice please or anyone had one but wished that they had chosen the other?

Thanks x

a lot of surgeons don't do the band anymore. I just looked up plication. It sounds interesting - sort of like a sleeve only reversible - but it sounds like it's pretty new. There may not be many people on here who've had it or know much about it.

Love my band! Down 140lbs two plus years out. No longer diabetic or high blood pressure.

Make sure you talk to the absolute best doctor. Best wishes on your decision!

Thanks for the replies, it's so confusing when you hear so many conflicting stories, some love the band and others would avoid it like the plague! Lol

The only thing putting me off Plication is long term effects are not yet known

The surgeon who I chose for the band also offers 5 year aftercare package to cover any surgery complications and has the lowest publicised complications

Thanks again x

I just had my band removed last Friday 7/29/16. I had my band placed 3/2007, so I lived with it for almost 10 years. When my surgeon opened my up he discovered that my band had put a HOLE in my diaphragm. He said he had never seen that before. At 2 years out, is when I first started having complications with my band. I followed all the rules to a "T", and did experience some initial success with it. But once the complications started it was never ending. I have also put back on every one of the 70 pounds I originally lost. The Dr that placed my band doesnt even do them anymore. EVERYONE I know personally that was banded, had to have surgery again.

What ever you decide to do, just keep in mind that the longer a procedure has been around, the more informed a decision you can make. When I had my band placed in 2007, it was considered to be "much safer" than the bypass, but was still the new guy on the block. Go figure....

I am having a revision to bypass in November of this year.

doesn't this surgeon offer bypass or sleeve? Those seem

to be more solid options - at least for now. Plication

may turn out to be a good option, but it hasn't been

around long enough to know. I'd be tempted to go with one

of the two "tried & true" methods.

How high is your BMI?

Could you get a second opinion to see if other options are feasible?

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
