Waking up after surgery

Recommended Posts

I woke up in a lot of pain from anesthesia gas in my chest. They had me laying almost flat, I didn't have an oxygen mask, breathing tube, drain, or catheter. Just an IV. I just remember moaning and cussing each time the nurse would look at me and walk by instead of giving me pain meds. Finally I moaned "F**************CK" loud enough for her to come over and ask what ny pain level was. "Um, it's at like 9 bimbo, thats why I'm moaning!!!!!!!!" Is what I wanted to say. Haha.

Woke up feeling pretty good. I told anesthesia people that i get nauseated from the anesthesia, so they gave me anti nausea meds in my iv during surgery. That helped a lot

I woke up with a drain, catheter, oxygen, and IV. I was more concerned about the guy next to me as they kept telling him to breath. I remember people talking to me but was in a state of confusion until I got to my room and family. They take great care of you so I was never scared. Some pain and was introduced to my little button. All other tubs didn't bother me. I kept telling everyone that I needed to have my surgery, thinking I had not had it done. You'll get through it!!

I'll probably have oxygen, it all depends on how your body reacts to the anesthesia. I always need it because when I wake up from any surgery my lungs are a little weak but it all depends on your oxygen level and if you personally need it or not.

And I have done a lot of research to pre pare for my surgery and if you have a drain in again it all depends on if they need it. Sometimes people just wake up with IV, no drain needed. It's case to case on that one too.

And the catheter depends on the Doctor. My surgeon said he doesn't use them but if you wake up you have a day to pee and if you don't they will put one in. You'll have to ask your surgeon if he uses catheters or not it's all up to them.

I haven't had my surgery yet this is just all from asking questions and research.

I can handle oxygen but the whole breathing tube thing freaks me out. Thank you all so very much.

You are pretty much to out of it to realize you have a breathing tube and once you are responsive - the RN will remove it. I have had several surgeries and only remember them removing it once (and it wasn't that bad)! You'll be fine.

Ya I think there was oxygen. Waking up from surgery is always disorienting and bizarre. It just feels like you were out for 5 minutes. I usually wake up crying from just being confused. It's no big deal, you'll do great!

When I had my egd I was told it was a twighlight sedation, and that some people don't go to sleep all the way, I did though! The surgery I was completely knocked out!

When I woke up - no oxygen, just an iv line in my arm (and oddly another one on my chest that wasn't connected that they had put in as a "back up" because i have a history of iv lines stopping). I just remember being VERY disoriented and kinda confused and the lights were SOOOO bright! I could hear them asking me how I was and I just kept saying I don't know how i feel. that only lasted for a little while - after about 15 minutes I was more alert. I wasn't painfree but not really in pain either - just uncomfortable for a while.

Is the anesthesia different from what they give you during the EGD? Or what they give you for oral surgery?

I believe it's different. I don't think they give general anesthesia for an EGD or oral surgery.

With mine I remember them trying to put ether a cpap mask or an oxygen mask on me first. And I pushed it away and got kinda upset because I don't like things on my face so then the nurse got me a nasal canula and then I was out again for a while until I woke up enough to ask for my own clothes a few hours later. Then I fell asleep again. It took many hours for my anesthetic to wear off and stop making me sleepy. I had an Iv and a catheter (that drove me insane later) and no drains

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
