My doctor was trying to convince me to have a pannectomy but I thought that was putting the cart before the horse. So, I am having my seminar for sleeve surgery the 12th of next month. After making the appointment and doing some reading about the sleeve I got afraid that I would be losing who I am. You see, I love to cook for myself and for others. It gives me great joy in making the food and I enjoy the eating of it (too much so).

I don't want to lose who I am after the surgery. Has anyone else fought this fear?

well I will tell you I also LOVE TO COOK. and I love to bake.

I still do. I find my tastes have changed somewhat, but it also doesn't bother me to cook what I'm not wanting to eat. there is always something in the mix that I love to eat as well so it works out just fine.

right now due to an overabundance of tomatoes, I have a lovely red sauce cooking down on the stove for later this week. I made steak and chicken quesadillas for my family today and had steak, chicken, black Beans and cheese with salsa for me.

the only thing is when I was on liquids I did not want to cook for others, but I had planned ahead and had things in the freezer for the family so I could just have my liquids in peace. but once I was eating it was game on again.

I love to cook and still do. But you have to weigh your options. Not to have surgery and live with being overweight and unhealthy and possibly shortening your life. Or cooking a little less and loosing weight which leads to feeling better, looking better, better health and so on

Thank you Christinamo7. I was certain that I was going to lose who I am. I'm ready to better my life but not wanting to give up on who I am. I did this once in my life and it took me years to find me again. Knowing that I will have a time of sacrifice from cooking; is ok because I have canned some pretty healthy and delicious Soups. My grandsons won't have to worry about grandma being ill all the time either. You really have settled me down a lot.

Christinamo7 I really enjoyed reading your post. I am scheduled for surgery on August 8th, and today I have started my pre-op diet. I too, love to cook, bake, and of course eat, lol:). As a matter of fact, I have a degree in Culinary Arts and I love to bake Desserts and thought about making a business of it someday, but I had doubts about that once I decided on surgery. I mean, how can WLS and baking go in the same sentence?? I know it sounds contradictory, but I believe that it can be possible. I read an article not too long ago about three sisters who were all obese and decided to have WLS- all three. One of them decided to go to school to become a pastry chef. After reading that, I said, more power to her! I love it.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
