I am only 5 days post op and am struggling with the liquid diet. Part of me is disappointed the surgeon didn't require a pre op diet to mentally prepare me for this. I'm having a hard time getting the Protein shakes in......nothing seems to taste pleasant. According to my paperwork from the hospital, I can begin to add soft foods (yogurt, cottage cheese, etc) in 5-7 days post op. Do any of you think it's too soon?

No, it is not too soon. Try the yogurt first since it is very soft and easy to swallow and digest. Just take a very little spoonful at a time. You might be able to eat half the container. But, you might also only be able to do a couple spoonfuls. That's okay. Things are not going to taste good so soon after surgery. Just do your best to get the fluids in and your Protein. Just get as close as you can. Don't force yourself to eat or drink if you just can't. But, make sure you do whatever you can.

I'm a little curious as to why some surgeons don't have people follow a pre-op diet. Makes no sense not too.

Good Luck.

I had puréed foods at 10 days post op, so not too soon at all really. Life for me on the Protein Shakes was hard because I was lactose intolerant immediately post op and the shakes that were lactose free made me violently vomit, but once I got to start adding in soft foods like yogurt, it got easier. More choices make thing so much easier! You are doing fine. It's just the part of the recovery very few doctors explain to their patients unfortunately.

I had to read your post again because I thought it was mine. I did great on the pre opp but now that I am six days out I have no appetite and am having a hard time getting in all my liquids and Protein. Puréed foods start tomorrow so I am hoping it will be easier. Good luck ... You are not alone

It's hard. I'm six days out myself. The Protein drinks aren't pleasant. Try them over ice (makes it easier for me). It takes me close to two hours to do a Protein Drink. I can eat about two ounces right now. I stop as soon as I feel discomfort or start burping. I'm already sick of sweet, so I concentrate on savory flavors for my food. I've had broth from Thai Tom Yum Kha Soup, cream of wheat with Greek yogurt and some dill and seasoned salt (tastes like tzatziki sauce), and some other cream-based Soup. This is all on the "full liquids" part of my diet. I don't move on to purée for another week.

My advice is to take tiny bites (1/4 tsp), just dip the tip of your spoon in and eat that. It helps to slow you down.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
