Insurance Approval Jitters

Grrrrrrr! !! I'm really starting to hate the woman I'm supposed to get a hold of at my surgeon office... she is never there... and when she is she never returns my phone calls!!! Called at 830 this am left a vm, called just now at 140 and she is gone for the daum day.

My coordinator is like that too. I can only get a word with her through email and sometimes she doesn't even answer me. It's super annoying but I just try to tell myself I'm not the only one she's dealing with /:
I know it's just frustrating cause she was just out on vacation for two weeks, and then the last two weeks she has been out of the office by noon at least half the time. So I can't imagine how anything gets done if she is never there.

I confirmed with another rep and my provided that preauthorization is not required but because they could look for a reason to reject we asked for a review prior to services. They submitted documentation for review. It is really the same thin they just don't call it an authorization.

@@doingitmyway it is a pre-determination of services. I actually just chatted with someone who still works in the Pre-Auth department just to make sure nothing had changed......and it hasn't....Pre-Determination/Prior Auth....is required for bariatric surgery.

Just make sure you have your approval prior to the surgery so you don't have to worry about your claim being denied.....My hospital bill alone was $47,000 and that didn't even include the surgeon's fee...........that's not a bill you want to get stuck with. good luck to you.

I finally got an answer back on whether or not my coordinator got my packet to submit to insurance. It's funny how 5 words can make your day. Now I just have to wait for her to submit it lol. Even more wait ☹️post-280196-14671252022001_thumb.jpg

I know the waiting is killing me but the little things make me happy because I know once she sees it it'll on be a matter of time before she submits it. I assume not too long because they want to make that 30 grand lol. I hope yours gets back to you too because the wait is so anxiety inducing, thinking about if something is going wrong!

Greetings!

Long time lurker - 1st time poster.

My Dr. office submitted for approval yesterday. She said we'd know in 15 days, if not earlier. Emotionally, I'm all over the place. I'm nervous, excited, happy, confused, you get the picture.

How long does it normally take to have the surgery after approval? I suppose that depends on a lot of factors but ...in general...how long?

I think what I'm most nervous about is telling my Rheumatologist. When I told my GP, she became very upset and explained that if I practiced a little self control, this wouldn't be an issue. So, I said goodbye to that 10 yr relationship. I don't want to do the same to my Rheumy.

Work is another story altogether. I have no desire to tell the majority my plans. I love everyone I work with but I fear they may see optional/elective surgery as a selfish way to put undue stress on them. Thoughts?

So....I'm waiting for my approval and while I wait, these are the things that flutter in and out of my mind. It's constant. No amount of distractions keep the thoughts at bay for long.

Breathe...in through the nose....out through the mouth.

T

We're in it together. Has your doctor's office said how long it takes to get scheduled after the approval?

I too am in the wait for approval mode. The office manager in my doctor's office said that fast notice of approval is unusual and that a quick notification is generally a denial. I've decided to root for a longer wait so I can get an approval! No guarantees from the office manager but a new way to look at the process.

:) This is a great way of looking at it! Well, there are 3 of us waiting, waiting, waiting. Hopefully it will go well for everyone and we can cheer each other on post op.

Thank you. Praying for you also. I have been submitted for a week. My coordinator said she will check the status today. I have some personal issues going on so I already feel defeated. Praying and needing some good news.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
