HAIR LOSS(THINNING & BREAKAGE)[emoji33][emoji31][emoji30]

I am. I just went in for a relaxer and my stylist said that I had lost a lot of hair at the top of my head. I am only three weeks post-op!

I'm so worried about this cause I'm already thinning out due to alopecia. If anyone knows how to prevent this, please let me know. I don't want to be bald.

I began to lose hair and experience breakage around four months post-surgery, but it wasn't dramatic or noticeable to anyone else. I stopped washing and drying my hair daily and instead washed it every third day to minimize strain. On the days when I wasn't washing it, I just wore a shower cap and then sprinkled on a little dry Shampoo to freshen it. I also apply hair masks a couple of times a week that are for damaged and breaking hair. If you're in a pinch, coconut oil can help. Just apply it once a week, put a shower cap on and a towel on your shoulders to catch the drip, and leave it in for half an hour or so. Nioxin hair products have been helpful to me. I haven't taken Biotin or any other Vitamins for my hair because I have PCOS and am acne-prone. Biotin caused a horrific breakout in the past.

Losing weight slowly has helped to minimize Hair loss, and I also don't have any loose skin. I added in a reasonable amount of healthy carbs (more fruit, vegetables, oatmeal, quinoa) and slowed my weight loss a bit while also making my diet more sustainable long-term.

I have not yet had my Surgery but I have a few relatives who have had the sleeve and experienced Hair loss. What really helped them is Biotin and making sure they are hitting their full Protein intake that they were set with. My aunt's hair is now thicker and longer than it was before surgery. Also plenty of Water, but of course you knew that already (:

I was one of the ones who lost a significant amount of hair. Plus my hair turned very dry and had a lot of breakage. I am two years post op and my hair is still prone to falling out. This despite meeting my Protein goal almost everyday, taking my Vitamins, Biotin, having normal labwork. I tried coconut oil, Argan oil, emu oil, various essential oils, scalp massages, and multiple shampoos for Hair loss.< /p>

The only thing that helped me is I began adding powdered marine collagen to my Water everyday. This helped cut the fallout by at least half if not more. I then began drinking a cup of bamboo tea everyday. Bamboo tea is very high in silica which is one of the building blocks for healthy skin hair and nails. The bamboo tea really helped my hair hair become soft again and also stopped the breakage. My hair is much better after adding these two things into my diet!!

I like I've lost about 2/3 of my hair and it keeps falling out. When does it stop?? 7 months post op.

I am 9 months post op and down 133lbs!! I started to lose my hair at 3months post op and although I'm not bald (yet) I have lost plenty of it.It also became dry and brittle with lots of breakage, so I cut it! I honestly am very happy about it, it looks healthier and fuller and suits my leaner face better than the bun i usually would wear. What I have not been able to deal with is developing alopecia of the eyebrow!!! My doctor is sure it's not related but has yet to order blood work for me since my surgery....YES, I SAID SINCE MY SURGERY 9 MONTHS AGO!!!!! I woke up one day to a missing eyebrow and it hasn't come back in. It's very disturbing and I'm currently changing PCP to try to get lab work done.SMH healthcare.....

congrats on the weight loss. I went to a derm to get labs done. I have hereditary alopecia so I'm scared to lose anymore. Read that some people take collagen pills. Might have to look into that. Good luck with yours and keep up the good work!

Thank you, I may make an appointment with a derm and get their opinion!! As far as the collagen pills go...I'm not too fond of swallowing pills but the bamboo tea sounds promising. Nevertheless, I'd rather have a missing eyebrow than feeling how I used to! Good luck with everything!!!

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
