I'm scared as hell, but the whole purpose of my surgery was to stop existing, and start living.

And @@Daisee68 I too just started. Last week during a walk I felt like running. I did. Didn't make it far but I did it and I promised myself I would keep it up.

This afternoon I went for a very uncoordinated walk/jog and it felt good. I even heard clapping. Turns out the clapping was my ass cheeks but for those few seconds I was inspired. So inspired I came home and signed up.

YES a million times over to the "start living" part!!!!

I was sleeved May 2105 (almost 1 year!) and did my first 5K in August 2015. I do this really pathetic half walk/half job thing that I call "wogging". I just did a race last week and did my first sub 13 minute mile pace for the whole race. Super proud ... but I did question if it was my bat wings that gave me that extra "speed" during the race. My husband assures me that this wasn't the case and even told me it was a good thing I got new sports bras or the flapping and swaying of the girls might have been enough resistance to slow me down. I also went to our local running store and was fitted for a great pair of running shoes. They are expensive, but sooooo worth it!

In another couple of weeks I will begin training for walking a marathon in September. I highly suggest that you look into a training program. There are a bunch out there if you look, but they are super helpful. And speaking of training ... do you think you might get your ass cheeks to teach mine how to clap?? I could use the extra encouragement on my runs and I think a cheering section just might do the trick!

@@becomingmandikaye Tough Mudder was just here on April 9 & 10th. This was the second year they had it in my town. If I make it through this half marathon without dying, Tough Mudder will be next on my list.

Mud runs are awesome. You run for a bit and then have to wait in line for an obstacle. Hot men put their hands on your ass and push you over a wall and you thank them for it. Best day ever.

@@WorkinOnMe I didn't even think of shoes. I'll go to our running store the beginning of next week.

And yes I have thought of training. In fact at one point and time I had a personal trainer. Just so happens we remained very good friends. I contacted him after I registered, and he is going to be setting me up a program.

Then on top of that my niece is a marathon runner. I too contacted her. She is going to start working with me as well.

Best part is both have agreed to run the marathon with me.

I am 5.5 months out from surgery and I did a crazy thing like you only I went for the FULL marathon! Mine is October 9th. I am training with a group while raising $$ for a cause. One of the nice accountability things is that there are group training runs each Saturday and people of all levels who are training. You might look to see if there is a similar type of training group in your area. I find that the group runs get me up at out of bed better than I do on my own. I get up earlier on Saturdays for the runs than I do to go to work, but I haven't missed one yet and that included the week I had to walk because I was having such bad allergies I coughed all the time. Anyway, the team is a great accountability group.

I also know that there are just regular running clubs in my area that train 1-2 times a week. They don't cost anything and also provide a group for motivation if that helps you.

I also want to second the get fitted with good running shoes. Make sure they take the time to look at your gate and your arches, etc. I had one running store where the guy who fit me took one look at me and insisted I needed motion control shoes. (for flat footed and people who overpronate). I have high arches and a neutral gate so those shoes were the opposite of what I needed. It messed me up so bad that 2 MRIs, a lumbar puncture, and physical therapy later, my PT, a runner, finally figured out what was causing me so much pain! The only explanation I have come up with was that the guy took one look at me and saw fat woman and assumed I had flat feet. Anyway, shoes will run you $100 or more, but getting fitted correctly will make all the difference and prevent injuries.

Lipstick lady is right about the sport bra. I've not long started c25k and even though I'm on holiday in Cyprus I'm still running the programme.

Thanks for the advice. I have already contacted the one and only running store and unfortunately their programs meet at 6:30 in the morning, and being a single mom of a 10 year old does not allow that to be possible for me. So, I will stick with my personal trainer and my niece who is a marathon runner. I have every bit of faith in them both, and thankful I have them.

I also have an appointment with someone at the running store on Monday for fitted shoes. She explained to me that I could get a decent pair for $160, but they can range up to $200 so I am totally prepared.

Congratulations on your decision. All though I'm excited to run, I have no desire to put in 26 miles. The half is just a way to prove to myself I can do it.

Cyprus?!? Oh I'm a little jealous. I'm a huge history buff and I hear it is rich in history.

And yes, my next day off is Monday and as much as I hate to shop, I do plan on searching for that perfect sports bra.

Thanks. I am not sure at all what I got myself into, but I'm on my way! I figured out last night that I need to average 13:30 miles or less to beat the bus that picks you up for being too slow. :P:huh: I am averaging 14 min/miles now so I think I can do it by October.

Depending on your size, I highly recommend Moving Comfort bras. I like Maia, but I am a D/DD cup even after more than 70 lbs. They have lots of different styles. I knew I liked Maia, and I knew I wanted to run during my honeymoon period so I found a really amazing clearance on maia bras last fall. I got two for less than $15 each! They are bright pink, but they are smaller than what I have since shrunk out of so I have managed not to have to pay full price for any new ones yet.

haha. good for you. im not a runner either but i now run 2 miles like 5 times a week. not cuz i like it just cuz it keeps me losing weight and i want that more than i hate running. i felt like crap for a long time after surgery and when i stalled i thought to myself what the hell did i do now i don't enjoy eating AND im still fat. but now almost 75lbs down. i'm good with it lol :)

do whatever you want! cuz you can and that's a winner mentality. :P@@Andrea72

      Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs. 
      I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm. 
      I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order. 
      My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

      Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
      Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
      A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.

      I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
      Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

      Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
      I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

      Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
