Anyone have dizziness?

Recommended Posts

I have been experiencing dizziness for about three weeks. Thought it was due to a sinus infection I had, but sinuse infection is gone and I still have dizziness. I read that losing 1 - 2 percent or more in body weight can cause dizziness. Has anyone had any dizziness with their weight loss? If so, have you been able to find out about it?

I had pretty bad dizziness soon after I began my 4-week pre-op diet and then for another month or so afterward. It was especially bad if I laid on my side or got up quickly. I initially thought that it was low blood sugar or something along those lines. My family doctor suggested that it likely could be an inner ear problem that can take some time (a couple of months) to resolve. I was skeptical, because I did not have any remaining sinus pain or any other symptoms, but it did resolve after a couple of months.

I find that I have lightheadedness/dizziness when I stand up, especially, e.g. when I get out of bed, so you're not the only one. I actually haven't gotten concerned enough to really worry about it yet. I don't think it's so much the weight loss per se, as probably hypoglycemia - moderately low blood sugar. I am really not eating a lot yet - just finishing my second week post-op.

i have experienced it, but they have been adjusting my bp meds post op, which I believe is the cause for me. it can also be caused by not getting enough fluids.

Although, if you had a sinus infection you could still have an ear infection, they do not always cause pain. would be worth having checked out I'd think.

Lack of fluids can affect blood pressure and cause dizziness so make sure you stay hydrated. Perhaps some electrolytes? I had to have an infusion last year that make my blood pressure drop and get dizzy and nurses kept barking at me to drink lol. It did help though

That's a good thought too, Christina - I should check my blood pressure, maybe my medication regimen is too aggressive now that I have lost 40+ lb...

I've never heard of weight loss per se as the cause of dizziness, but that doesn't mean it isn't possible.

There are several causes of dizziness. Some have already been mentioned. Another may be too high a level of vit. D and/or two low a level of thiamin (vit. B-1). Blood tests determine the probability. I started a topic on thiamin two days ago and included a link to info sheets from a division of NIH. You may want to check them. The post is in the food & Nutrition forum.

Did you have a fall, bang your head?

OP, you didn't say when or what you're doing when you feel dizzy or the degree of dizziness. If there is a pattern, it may help narrow it down. In any case, since it's been going on a few weeks, you'd do well to check in with your regular doctor.

I also had dizziness about 3 months after surgery. My doctor took me off of bp meds and I have not had any problems since.

Yep, I am on 3 blood pressure meds (also have a genetic predisposition so a problem even when I was young/thin)... but the 3 of them seem to be too much now, as I am on the boundary of low blood pressure. I emailed my doctor and he agreed that I can go off one of my blood pressure meds - nice! :-)

I do have dizziness sometimes when I stand up, and that is when I know i am not drinking enough. Could be something as simple as that.

Definitely could be BP meds too.

I am 3 months post op and asked my dr about this today at my visit. My blood pressure is much lower now. They did stress getting Enough liquids. I knew already I was low. Also don't avoid salt. My diet is so much lower in salt so adding a shake to my eggs or having some Soup might help. The doc said if that doesn't help the dizziness on standing I need to talk to my pcp about it.

I don't have low bp and never been on bp meds. All blood tests have been normal. I have increased my Water intake and am hoping that helps, but i was getting at least 6 cups a day. This all started when I got sick with sinus infection. Went to doctor and they did a dizziness test where they talt me in different directions and said I had vertigo. It's gotten really bad weather I'm doing yoga, standing or sitting the room starts spinning. Not fun!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
