Calorie intake

Recommended Posts

I am 3 years post op and I have recently had some regain issues. Well I have been back on track for months and have been in touch with my dietician and surgeon....who keep telling me completely different things about my nutrition.

My dietician says 1200 cals a day 60-80g of Protein and wanted me to up my carbs. And getting protein from lean meats rather than the shakes.

My surgeon says 800-1000 cals a day low low carbs and high protein from the shakes.

They both agree with exercising 5-6 times a week(which I do).

I am so confused on what to do and who to listen to...yes I am asking for my records to get a second opinion but thought I would start here.

So my question to you is what does your doctors/dietitians tell you?

Well, I can't meet my Protein goals without a shake a day so it doesn't matter to my surgeon how I do it, but I aim for 80g + per day.

Why does she want you to up carbs - are you low energy?

I don't count calories so I can't advise on that but here is what works for me.

Literally, eat dense Protein first (ie not mixed in with salad etc)

Eat 4-5 mini meals per day.

Limit carbs - mostly from veggies. I seldom eat bread, Pasta or fruit even.

Stay hydrated!

I am 4 years post op and my year 3 was the hardest so far in terms of maintaining. I got almost 10 over goal at one point. I am back under goal and doing good now!

I am 16 months post op and still not at goal, so I'm still in the losing phase. They want me to stay at 1200 cals a day, high Protein 80-100g per day and low carb.

I can tell you that higher carbs kept me at the same weight. I gave up my Quest bars and lost a pound in a few days.

Kathy812 are Quest bars bad? I thought they are relatively low carb with height Protein and lots of fiber.

I will say that many people made it to goal eating quest. Conversely, many people's weight plateaued eating Quest. I agree w/cowgirl, no food is technically bad but there are BETTER choices. You have to see what works for you.

That's interesting -- I noticed a stall when I started eating Quest bars too. I can have maybe one a week.

How many carbs are you having per day? I am stalled and have been for 3 months and would like to start losing again, my husband just had surgery last week and I thought it would help me restart, but I still haven't lost any more weight. And here is the kicker I am no longer able to see my surgeon or nut because they are no longer in my insurance group.

I am told no more than 100G of carbs(admittedly, this is where I struggle, many days I'm higher, my weakness is fruits.)

I can so relate w/the stalls , I've been stalled for three months too & just recently went down 1#. I work out 4 days a week but should probably increase it to 5 to see if that helps. The struggle is SO real!!!

I'm only 4 months out but I was experiencing a lot of stalls when I started upping my exercise dramatically. I was told to eat more carbs because of the increased exercise (2 hours every day), and to up my calorie intake. This did help me start loosing weight again and I haven't had as many stalls. For the carbs she did tell me to eat fruits and veggies. I try to keep it under 80 g per day.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
