Shoe Size Dropping (NSV?) - What about you?

Recommended Posts

For a long time I was at a size US11 women's shoe, but in the two years leading up to my surgery, I often bought size 12s or even 13s just so I could fit them width-wise. Because of this, I am not EXACTLY sure how big my foot actually was at my highest weight.

About 4 months after surgery (last March) I was measured for a new pair of running shoes for a 5k I was doing. By that point I'd already lost over 100 lbs from my starting weight and was measured at an 11 (10.5 on one foot, even 11 on the other). I recently needed shoes for a new job (second job) and realized I'd bought shoes that were just too big. I asked the clerk at payless if I could be measured and she measured me at a 10, (9.5 on one foot, 10 on the other). So I've dropped a whole shoe size in both feet AT THE VERY LEAST, possibly more. I'm still about 100 lbs from goal weight, so it may be possible that I could drop to a 9.5 or even a 9 before all of this is through.

I am just curious -- how many shoe sizes have other people lost?? It is really nice not to be in an 11 anymore because it is really hard to find shoes that are bigger than a 10, but even 10s can be challenging depending on the store! Definitely one of my favorite shopping related NSVs.

With each of my 4 pregnancies I went up 1/2 size going from an 8 to a 10. With my new weight loss I hope to be a 9 when I get to goal.

Me too! I went from an 11 to a 10 in the first 6 months which is amazing since they rarely make the "cute shoes" above a 10! :-)

YES! Me too! I thought I was the only one! I used to need a 10W or 9.5WW, but now I'm fitting into 8.5 regular shoes, no extra wide sizes needed. I can even wear heels and girly shoes. It one point, I only wore men's sneakers because my feet were so wide.

My watch is also really loose now and I need to go get the links tightened.

Haha. Yup, I went from a 10 to a 9. I found out I no longer fit in my current shoes when I kept walking out of them in Chicago on a business trip. Down town Chicago is no fun when you can't walk ten feet without your shoes falling off. ???? needless to say I went shopping when I got home.

I like being an 11 as long as I don't need a narrow. I can find shoee easy at Nordstrom and Saks. Last night however, I was trying on shoes at Norstrom and in some brands i can wear a 10.5. I feel it is impossible for me the smaller than a 10 because that is the size I wore at 140 lbs. I want to be a 10 or an 11 because a 10.5 might as well be a 13, nothing but drama.

My feet used to swell a lot but now i am on a pill that has stopped that, so it isn't all weight loss some is Fluid reduction. I used to get 12W to accomodate rhe swelling but i don't think I will ever need a wide again.

I was SO hoping for this but no such luck. Still size 11, but they do fit slightly better.

Hi, I am a little over 2 months post op and I too went from a 9 to 8.5. I hadn't been 8.5 since high school so I thought my feet had just grown, but nope. It was the weight.

Luckily I can still wear some of my 9's with the thicker socks I wear now because of being cold. haha.

I am hoping I can still pull of my size 9 sandals this summer because I have tons of them!

I've been dropping shoe sizes as well. Most of my life I have been 9.5-10.0 and now I am around 8.5-9.0. It's so weird since the majority of my life I was skinny and when I gained a bunch of weight I never went up in size.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
