Help! I am 3 days post op and I'm struggling!

Recommended Posts

Water really hurt my stomach for the first few weeks after surgery so I resorted to warm broth and Powerade zero - I eventually was able to tolerate drinking a few sips of room temperature water at around 4 weeks and do really well with it now. As far as the pain meds go - I stopped them while still in the hospital; I seem to have a high tolerance for pain. All people are different, though, and you must do what is best for you.

Things get better - do what you can do when you can do it. It took a while for me to be able to get all my Protein in - but every day I was able to do a bit more. You will get there!

What worked for me was walking a lot, using a heating pad while sitting or laying and gas x strips will help with gas as your bowels start working again which also can be painful.

This usually will get better every day, mine was gone after about 5 days but it improved a little everyday.

To keep dehydration at bay which is a vicious cycle you must sip liquids like crazy. Try room temperature liquids. The cold can make your tummy seize up. Keep the cup in your hand and sip every few moments. I swear the number 1 job for the first couple weeks is just sipping liquids.

If you don't do this nausea will set in and you will feel terrible.

If you are nauseous now, call your doctor and ask for something. This will help but it will come back if you don't sip.

If dehydration gets completely away from you, you will need to go in and get IV fluids.

Best of luck, I hope you feel better soon.

Hello. How long did it take your pouch to expand in order to keep sipping? Today was my first day with liquids and I was able to drink the broth (8 oz) and crystal light (8 oz)...this was for lunch and I have not been able to tolerate anything else. This evening, I took one sip of nectar Protein and had to request nausea meds and my stomach feels so uncomfortable and full. My Doc doesn't want to release me until I'm able to take-in at least 64 oz. I'm thinking yikes how will I do this. The gas is coming out with lots of burping, but not from the other end. Will the relief from gas help to take in more liquids?

"remember my doctor saying to mix a little diet cordial into the Water because for some reason it helps the body metabolise it better after having a bypass"

May I ask? What is diet cordial?

Understood. I had crystal light to my water, eating some Gelatin, and chicken or beef broth. I can tolerate all of it, it's just that I'm looking for a plan to follow that will allow me to get it in and not become dehydrated. The dietician just left my room and she says to sip sip sip every 5 minutes. I just think it's easier in those who have had the sleeve as the capacity is greater.

I wasn't sure either! :) It looks like a type of juice or juice drink?

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
