Hair loss...does it ever come back?

Recommended Posts

I did lose some but not so much that it was noticeable when it happened. When I noticed it was when it started coming back and I found a million short pieces falling out of my pony tail! Thing I did... Followed post-op Vitamin and Protein instructions, took Biotin and attempted to feed myself as much as my weight loss would bear, (1000-1200 cal per day) with exercise. Same as the folks who lose a lot of hair, I suppose. Personally, other than staying properly nourished, I don't think there's a lot you can do. It's a response to trauma and some bodies handle it better than others. It DOES come back. Just part of the deal.

You're so right, it's definitely on the con list in regards to WLS. But in my opinion the pro list is longer ????

Will try to stay as healthy and proactive as possible and hope/pray for the best!

Hmmm...you've got a valid point! ????

it seems to me that it's inevitable and some experience it more than others in regards to the severity.

@@2goldengirl - I don't think the actual surgery being the cause for the stress, more the big drop of calories that follows the surgery. I understood that to be more of the issue than the actual procedure. My doctor said its part (hair loss) of the side effects and that not everyone loses ALOT of hair. He said if you don't feel a bit tired or lose some hair in the those first few months then you are probably not doing something right. I really didn't feel that tired after I cut my BP meds in half. I have lost hair. It started around the 2-3rd month and slowed about 6 weeks ago and has now started back up. It actually kind of reflects when I was losing the most weight.

It may be a potential con, but even if you go completely bald and have to wear a wig the rest of your life, being bald won't kill you. Carrying around an extra 100+ pounds of fat the rest of your life very well may kill you.

I have really thick hair (fine in texture but a lot of it). I was sleeved in April and haven't noticed any significant Hair loss so far.

I used to wear my hair long but soon after surgery I cut it short and get frequent trims. I also have been able to get at least 100 grams of Protein a day almost every day since the second day after surgery and take my Vitamins.

Let me comment for any males reading this - I noticed hair loss 4 months post surgery, increasing Protein HELPED. Glad I made a point of going to 100g plus before trying Rogaine. Once I started getting more Protein to go along with the heavy muscle building workouts I was fine. Now I am 52, and I am blessed with great genes (we keep producing hair, up until the time we have heart attacks). So I say the later for full disclosure.

I agree with JamieLogical on the anesthesia point. I lost hair after a very long surgery in 2010 (5 hours)

I lost quite a bit but it came back fine with no issues. If it's like that again I'm not too worried about losing some again.

Every time I have a surgical procedure involving anesthesia- hair falls out. So it's not just this surgery or the weight loss. And my body usually waits 2.5-3 months to do it. So yup, I'm right on track *picks up another stray hair*

@@Mistie - you have a point.

I've had two surgeries in my life never even noticed Hair loss with either procedure. Which makes me feel optimistic and think it won't be as bad as I was fearing?

It's very possible. Now I didn't start having this problem until four years ago, and many people have the loss with wls when not noticing it otherwise, but there are still many others who do not experience it or it is very minimal!

I took collagen, and hair Skin and nails 8 months prior to surgery. SO far I have experienced a little Hair loss around the hairline, but am back to taking my collagen and will start the hair skin and nails regime next month.

This is one of my big concerns. Such vanity, I know but my hair is something I've always felt good about myself. It doesn't help that I've noticed just with age my hair is getting thinner. I just ordered the Nioxin system and started on my liquid Biotin. I'm hoping both will help with re-growth!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
