when do you feel normal eating again (small portions still)?

Denisa - try making your Protein Shakes with almond milk if you are sensitive to dairy.

I was sleeved on June 15, my dr had me eat some refried Beans before I could leave the hospital. I was on puréed before I left the hospital(dr diets very) I could eat like 3 pea sized spoons and was done. Now at 6 months out I can eat just about anything and just because I can doesn't mean I do. Now I look at certain foods and just say no because I don't want to be on the treadmill another 30 mins because I ate a certain food. I run a home daycare and for lunch if I can't eat what I fix them I simple get out the lunch meat and a piece of cheese roll it up and eat it as my lunch. I don't have a problem going out to eat or whatever because I get to talk more to everyone and get to feed my 18 month old grandson:) I am not going to complain about getting done early because it gives me time to enjoy myself and others. Before I would be to busy stuffing my face to real talk or enjoy others durning meals. So just think ahead and you will see the many blessing you will receive and enjoy. I feel as normal as I did before just healthier and making better choices!!!

Yes, you will get to eat "normal"--and by normal, I mean small portions (some larger than others), but almost all foods will go through that sleeve--but, it will be a very slow progression. One day you will just realize that you can eat normally again. This is why so many surgeons and nutritionists INSIST that you take the first year "grace" period to reteach yourself to eat healthy, QUALITY foods!

Okay, so to my bit of advice. There is already a bunch of great advice on this thread, but I would like to add a mind-set of thinking that got me through those first few months of adjusting to the sleeve. I told myself over-and-over that I had spent my whole life eating whatever I wanted and in COPIOUS amounts (hint, why I was so fat); so, bearing a few months of a restricted, limited diet was nothing at all because I had had almost literally every eatable, desirable food out there. That was why I was in the situation that I was in: a newly sleeved stomach, tolerating liquid and pureed foods. Thus, I took a deep breath each time, ate what I could per doctor's orders and endured it.

You CAN do this. You WILL do this. You WILL succeed. And all that you will endure will be WORTH it! Good Luck!!!

You all helped me feel better and stop thinking I made a mistake

It kinda reminds me of the first months of my babies, they are now 10 yo and 8 yo.

I had c sections and had to "survive" the pain, the sleepless nights and all the adjustments to a new life.

I guess now I am the baby since this is my new life. I guess it is like being reborn. I was thinking about this today when I was eating my pureed food just like a baby...

I was sleeved on 12/11 and today I started full liquids. When I drunk a chocolate premier protien it gave me real bad dirrahea. I was fine drinking these before surgery, I hope my body justs needs time to adjust. I really dont know the full feeling and I havent been hungry at all. But just stay positive, we will get through this. :)

I was sleeved September of this year and I wasn't able to drink premier shakes or milk(prior to surgery I could drink both). I hope it changes so I can drink them too.. Have never hit my Protein goal since surgery

Now that you are three months out, you should be able to get Protein from lots of other sources besides shakes and milk. You should be able to eat solid foods now, which means meat, Beans, nuts.... There are also lactose-free protein supplements if the surgery has made you lactose intolerant.... No reason not to be meeting your minimum protein requirement by now.

I was sleeved on Dec 7th, and i'm so full just trying to get my liquid and Protein in. My program says no meat until week 4 and that's just fish. Week 5 is ground meat, turkey, chicken. I can't have beef, ham, or pork for like 4 months. How did you get chicken in your plan so soon? Sounds scary to me.

i super duper feel you. i was sleeved on oct 7th. i went thru the regret thing big time. still going thru it a little bit. there are certain things i just can't eat. but to be fair i think it's the WAY i eat too. i don't take "pea sized" bites or go that slow so that's prolly my bad.

and, like some ladies above, i was doing premier Protein fine for a while and then suddenly i couldn't drink it i got super sick, diarrhea and everything but now i can drink it again (after taking a little) break.

i too am hungry all the time. my stomach doesn't growl but i have the hungry feeling. that part really pisses me off cuz i didn't think that was supposed to happen to us anymore (insert annoyed face).

my biggest regret is that i don't enjoy food anymore. like at all. but that might pass.

you just kinda get used to eating certain things that your body responds ok to and go with that. but i have friends that are like a year out or more that can "eat anything" so who knows.

I'm curious, during your preop liquid high Protein diet were you hungry at all??

I've been sleeved on dec 6th and I am in puree stage.

Today I ate a homemade Soup (sweet potatoes and some lean chicken), was seating like led in my stomach, like it is stuck.

I have trouble eating Protein, since all dairy and soy gives me an upset stomach (dhiarrhea and gas).

So I wonder, what can I use?

I am also hungry all the time.

My stomach can be heard growling....

I am regretting it a bit.

Wondering when I will feel normal again.

Lost 10 lbs already.

Second the PPI recommendation.

I would also suggest thinning any Soups you make to a watery consistency with low sodium broth. As for additional Protein sources, Beans and spinach are good sources of protein, and Fiber. Black Beans, lentils and split peas are my some of the higher protein beans.

You can also look into non-soy vegan protein powders blend a little of those into your meals and it can help increase your protein intake.

Different plans advance at different rates. This is the plan her doctor follows.

Depending on the severity of her dairy allergy that won't help unless she uses a non soy vegan powder since most of the really popular shakes contain either whey or soy isolates.

You only mentioned lactose intolerance in your post. If there are other barriers to getting your Protein in, then that's one thing. But if it's just lactose intolerance, by three months post-op, there are plenty of non-dairy Protein sources available. What other issues are you having besides the lactose intolerance? Are you having problems with nausea and vomiting? I know that can be a real issue for many post-op. My surgery-buddy, who had her sleeve the same day as me at the same place, had problems with nausea and vomiting for months after surgery and it affected her ability to get in ANY food, much less her required protein.

I'm a month out and find eating feels normalish if I don't eat too much or too fast and the food isn't abrasive to my sleeve or too fatty.

Pacific foods has the best puréed soups...so does trader joes.Also Isopure Liquid Protein comes in great flavors.

thank you. i hope you're right. i will say when i eat a lot of Protein i get less hungry. but i am hungry pretty much all the time. i don't eat carbs at all becuz they feel stuck in my throat and make me feel icky.

i eat alot of fruit (no sugar added) and cheese. sometimes Protein shakes. i will admit some days i'll eat very little. it just happens sometimes. but im never afraid of over eating cuz it's just not possible. nor am i afraid of carb overload cuz i can't eat carbs. i don't even eat vegetables at this point.

Ummm, hopefully you realize this but fruit IS carbs. In fact it's almost nothing but carbs. Good for you in many ways, yes, but fruit sugar is absorbed super fast and then your insulin shoots up and then falls, leaving you hungry. I'm 6 weeks out and the only fruit I've had is occasionally a few blueberries in my vanilla shake. Are you using a food tracker like My Fitness pal to enter everything you eat and drink? You might be surprised by how many carbs you are getting in fruit.

I will say I've been very lucky in many ways. I've not had one instance of vomiting, and only nausea the first couple days and then last week when I had a stomach bug. My biggest problem is that I can eat literally anything. yes, I have tried numerous things I am not supposed to have, but luckily only a few bites. In most cases they don't taste as good as they used to, esp when I can't stuff myself with them like I did in the past. So they mostly don't appeal to me much anymore (talking sweets here).

But with regular food, like a baked chicken breast, I still eat too fast and then get uncomfortably full before I realize it. Something I have to work on. It was easy pre-op to stretch out a meal for 30 min but when you're only eating 1/4 cup of food it's pretty difficult!

      Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs. 
      I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm. 
      I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order. 
      My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

      Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
      Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
      A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.

      I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
      Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

      Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
      I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
