Question about initial weight loss

Recommended Posts

Love the forums; and have been lurking for a few months now. I had my first follow-up with my surgeon today at the three week mark. I had my surgery October 21st.

I was very discouraged when I found out that I only lost 5 lbs since the day of my surgery.

I've read so many posts about people eating once a day... and can only take a few bites before getting full. I'm hungrier now more than ever, and am CONSTANTLY hungry. I keep my calories between 600-800 a day and make sure I do my vitamins; etc.

My doctor didn't seem concerned and basically told me I'm eating too much and to not drink Protein Shakes or eat Soup.< /p>

Just wanted to see if anyone else had such minimal weight loss at the three week/month range; and if anyone else is freakin' hungry like I am.

Thanks for the feedback, and hope everyone is doing well!

Did you have the sleeve, what is your starting weight, and height, it helps to better answer some of these questions the more info we have. Yes I am hungry all the time and was hungry from day 2. I can eat 1200 calories, but I stick closer to 1000. I had the sleeve 8/3, started out 253.5, as of today 218, so it is good and I am very thankful but feel like I am a slow loser with the weight, and the doc agrees but said it is the best way to lose, slow and steady. I think at 3 weeks I was also at about 5lbs down. It is true Protein, Protein and more protein, and the closer to 64oz of liquid the better. I get my protein, but not always the liquids, could be better. Just keep plugging away, I say the doc did his part, I am doing mine and that;s all we can do, good luck.

Thanks for the reply... My starting weight at the day of the surgery was 445 and today weighed in at 439.

You lost me at not being allowed Protein shakes or Soup. Without either of those I would have had a very difficult time reaching my Protein goals in the first two weeks after surgery.

However you are allowed to get in your protein, my understanding, based on my surgeon's instructions and my own experience, is that it is absolutely critical to do your best to get in your protein and fluids. I didn't worry at all about calories that early out (and they still aren't the primary focus at over six months post-op).

Just follow your program and you will lose weight. Please try not to compare yourself to other people. We all lose at different rates.

Best of luck.

Thanks for the encouragement... Much appreciated. I keep telling myself... SCIENCE... Science; why aren't you working?

Also, this is about time for your first stall (which usually comes at the third week). Just one more reason to focus on your Protein and fluids and not the numbers on the scale.

Shane did you take your measurements? I've read many who stall don't see the scale move, but they are losing inches.

Shane I am somewhat in the same boat.

I am 2 weeks post op. WIth the pre op diet and first week post op I lost 34 pounds. now after another week I am up 5 pounds..... which doesn't make sense, and personally I am freaking out.

It may seem strange, but I am encouraged to see that I am not the only one frustrated with my weight loss. I am nine days post-op and while I feel a difference, the scale has shown only a four pound weight loss. I am just standing firm on the belief that as long as I stick with the program the weight loss will happen. I'm in this for life so slow weight loss is better than where I've been.

It took me quite a while to trust this process. At the point I had the sleeve, I was all in. I must accept the combined wisdom and success that is overwhelming from this site. I will be patient and do what is suggested and I have absolutely no doubt things will work as they are supposed to.

I vividly remember reading about someone who was interested in a high Protein diet. It was recommended that he lose weight at the rate of 8-10 pounds a month. He was very angry and said "at that rate it will take me two years to lose the weight!" The response to him asked what weight would he be in two years if he didn't start losing.

I also remember reading about a sweet little old lady who passed away. When her family came to clean out her home, they found on the refrigerator the latest diet plan she had torn out of a magazine. This poor woman had been dieting her entire life! Right up until the end!!

I am happy I have the opportunity to have the sleeve surgery with Dr. Altamirano and have a new lifestyle instead of spending my life feeling deprived because I'm dieting. It's maddening. Don't be discouraged over "slow" loss. A pound is a pound, and gone forever most likely. Congratulations on your journey so far.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
