For those that have had leaks did your doctor just staple the incision on the stomach or did they take other precautions like stitching on top of the staples or gluing on top of them?
I've heard surgeons mention doing that so I'm wondering if that makes any difference.

Hi!
I was reading your post and I would like to know how your Dgtr is doing?!
I never done this before, not even doing reviews from any thing but I'm going through held with my Dgtr.
My Dgtr had surgery nov 7 2016, evethhing was fine. Dec 2 I brought her back to ER for pain and fever. She had a leak. Dec 2 surgery done, abdominal drain and peg tube inserted.
Dec 9 another surgery, , washout for peritonitis.
Dec 10 hemorrhage ... needed 10 units of blood in 3 hrs, ended up in lung and renal failure. In coma connected to ventilator ( artificial life) for 3 weeks.
Sooooo horrible. Dr's were thinking she will die any minute.
She was transferred to NY hospital, out of the ventilator 2 weeks ago.
We been in the hospital for 3 months. ICU and now regular floor.
She has s tuve in her nose, abd drain, wound back and the tPN , not eating or drinking , leak still there.
Planning to convert her to bypass but they can't do it now until the infection comes down and she recuperate... planning minimum 6 months to a year. She is only 19 years old and planning to stay for a whole year at the Hospital....
Pls help
Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

19 is to young for this kind of surgery she's still a child

My doc tried glue. It did nothing. He said stitching won't work. I had a drain for four months and then when it didn't heal they removed my stomach.

I am 44 and had a sleeve done in Late March. The staple gun failed and left a thumbnail sized hole in my stomach. It wasn't diagnosed for a week and a half. By that time I was septic, had a 9cm abscess and went into kidney failure. I was in ICU for 6 weeks and step down for a week. I went on dialysis while in the ICU. I spent the next five months with a drain bag in my ribs and a picc line in my left arm for nightly TPN. The leak never healed and I had a total gastrectomy four weeks ago. I am still recovering from that but doing better. I eat soft foods and liquids and get nightly Protein feeds in my jtube in my belly. I have a ways to go but on the road to recovery. My point in all that is the road may be rough but there is hope always.

Omg! What is a complete gastrectomy?? I feel so bad for you. When did you feel like something was wrong or what did it feel like? I got sleeved almost a month ago.

A complete gastrectomy is where they take the whole stomach out, connecting intestines directly to the esophagus.

As Christina noted it is the removal of the stomach and attachment of intestine to the esophagus. Known as a Total Gastrectomy or TG. That was 18 months ago. I am well now and leading a normal life. I had pain. Severe pain. Nothing helped. Trust me, if you had a leak for a month with no treatment, you would be dead.

Are you able to eat now? Or do you have g-tube?

Please pray for me. I'm going in for another Upper GI. Pray there is no leak and I'm making progress.

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣
