Liver Reduction Diet

Recommended Posts

When you all did your liver reduction diet did you essentially just follow an Atkins-style plan? Just basic low carb, minus out starches, flours and sugars?

I've seen some that say low calorie and low carb but generally the calorie counting isn't a part of low carb dieting. I've also read some reports saying full fat low carb diets like Atkins are most effective at eliminating liver fat. What has been your experience?

I was required to drink five diabetic Boost per day for two weeks. I also had Water and unsweetened drinks like Crystal Lite.

In the two weeks I lost 20 lbs and had no complications during surgery as my liver had shrunk considerably :D

My surgeon prescribed 4 Protein Shakes a day with 1/2 cup of non-starchy vegetables.

You are typically given a very detailed set of instructions by your surgeon. The most common instruction is 2 weeks of a 1000 calorie diet. However, there are all kinds of variations on this. Some are required to do Clear Liquids only, usually with a lower calorie quota, and the length of time ranges from the day before surgery to several months before surgery. Call your surgeon's office to make sure you are in compliance with what they want.

My surgeon's plan was 10 days of 3-4 Protein shakes a day, broth, SF drinks, SF popsicles.

I started mine about a week before the 10 days by replacing some of my meals with Protein skakes. I had already given up caffeine and diet soda. I figured it would be easier to ease myself into an all liquid diet. It seemed to work for me as I was never hungry during the pre-op diet.

No. My pre-op diet was 2 weeks. The first week I had to drink a Protein shake for Breakfast and lunch. For dinner I was allowed lean meat like chicken or fish on a bed of lettuce or salad greens. I could also supplement this with broth and sugar free Jello. In week two I could only drink liquids. I could have 3 Protein shakes a day and as much broth or sugar free Jello as I wanted. I was also able to eat sugar free popsicles both weeks as well.

The Atkins diet is high fat which doesn't work with the pre-op diet.

I didn't have one, only liquids the night before. But we were required to lose 10% of our weight over the six months of classes.

Thank you all for your reply. Basically I'm sad to say this but I'm 430 pounds so the doctor wanted me to lose 40 pounds before my surgery. They suggested the liver reduction diet to do so. I'm sorry I didn't clarify it is not the two weeks prior to surgery which I do believe is all liquid for him.

The liver-reduction diet is the same as the pre-op diet. So your doctor advised you to start now on the pre-op diet in order to lose 40 lbs before surgery. Many doctors won't take patients over 400 lbs in the U.S. So this may be a reason why. Or it could be he/she is testing you to determine if you are serious about losing weight. You would be surprised by how many people aren't serious and can't even lose 10 lbs before surgery.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
