I wouldn't worry about your past mistakes. All you can do is move forward from where you are now! Instead of thinking about paying for your mistakes, think about all the money you will be saving on future healthcare! Thankfully, my insurance covers me, I'm just having to pay the deductible.

What Protein shakes have you tried?

Meal Replacements and Protein Shakes whether it's pre-made or powder has always been nasty for me. That is why things like Slim Fast and Akins never works for me. I'm just one of those crazy people they cannot eat something that is not palatable. But I did find a shake that I can stomach for my pre op diet. It is not chalky like other shakes and the after taste is really not bad. However, the downside is it's only 10 grams of Protein instead of 15, and it's an Aldi store brand called fit & active. I don't know where you are so I don't know if you have that store. Unjury is another one that I was introduced to on this website that I'm going to try. You buy it online and it is very affordable and you can get a sample Start Kit for $22 plus shipping and then you can figure out which flavors you like.

I bought a large tub of Met-Rx vanilla Protein powder from Trader Joes. I just can't stomach the texture/taste. It's like drinking cake batter. I should try some premade shakes- they might be better.

I should look at it that way. And all the money I'll save from eating out. I'll be a cheap date now. ????

Yay for a August Banders group! I had my last pre op appt today. I have lost 4 pounds on the pre op diet so far. My surgeon said I need to keep heading in the direction. He kept saying that if he couldn't move my liver he wouldn't place the band (which I already knew). He didn't tell me I had to lose a certain number of pounds but I got the feeling he wasn't happy with 4. Did anyone's surgeon give them a specific amount of weight to lose?

I would love to have some friends who are going through the same things as me. I haven't told many people I am doing this and most of the ones who do know don't get it. Lol

I've not told many people either. I know this is going to sound nuts but I'm kind of embarrassed about it? I think people seem to think its the "easy way out" I'm like ummm no.. This is going to be freaking hard!! Does that make sense? Lol!!

Absolutely! This is not going to be easy at all. My fat friends (I can call them that because I am fat too), seem to think we can just split a sandwich or fries or Pasta dish etc and all will be well. That is their idea of being supportive. I keep telling them I won't be eating like that anymore yet they persist on saying how we can just share our meals at restaurants. Um...no! Then there is another friend who is a twig and tells me I don't need to lose weight. Bah!

I have told the people that I know will be supportive. I am learning that I have some really great friends! I'm ready to "go public" but I don't mind if people know. It's like the words are just hard to say, but a couple of people- like my grandma- have asked if it's ok to share.

Is anyone else having any last minute doubts? I can look past the fact that I'm stressing over the money part, and how life with food will change, but it's all the negative or horror stories that have me still just a little unsure about going through. Like the people who only have their bands for a few years and then need it removed. If I'm financing this thing for 4/5 years- I need it to last that long or longer. I went to my preop yesterday and asked the surgeon several questions and he reassured that some things do happen often (slips) and that some issues are rare (erosion). One thing I've realized is that this is definitely a different experience for each person. I'm hoping to be one of the ones who is successful with it, but that small voice inside me keeps saying "what if you're not, then you're screwed".

Yes, I am a bit worried about it. I live in Canada and revisions are covered for 5 years as are adjustments. I worry whether I can truly learn to take small bites and chew well enough. The money part worries me too. If I fail...there goes a ton of money down the drain! I think having doubts is normal.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
