Hello! My name is Gloria Olander. I'm from Pittsburgh pa and I had my gastric bypass surgery on June 8th,2015. I did very well with everything so far, just a couple things that I would like some advice on. My pre-op weight was 247lbs and I am now down to 223lbs, but than the weight stopped. I've been this weight for almost 2 weeks. I go to the gym every other day for 2 hrs and I'm basically living off of salads, Cereal, and baked potatos. I don't know what to do. I'm worried that no matter what I do I will not get over this hump. This is the main reason why I got the surgery in the first place is because I could only lose 20-30lbs than I couldn't lose any more. Any pointers on jump starting my weight loss again. I'm afraid I've become almost obsessed with the scale. Every time I see a scale I have to jump on it.

First off it sounds like you are eating the wrong things. You should be concentrating on Protein. I have elected to stay away from carbs with the exception of some fruit and veggies. I also avoid starchy foods. I had surgery in February and have had a couple weeks where I didn't lose but overall I have averaged 3 pounds a week of loss.

You should have guidelines from your Bariatric center on amounts of Proteins recommended and menu options. Secondly get over the scale.

I know I need to get over the scale. It's more mental than anything and I know I need to get more Protein. I do drink at least 2 Protein Shakes a day. I don't do well with meat, so it's hard for me to get in my protein. What do you suggest me add to my diet?

Eggs! I do eat eggs. Lol and I drink milk some times. That's the only Protein I get besides the shakes.< /p>

Didn't you get recommendations from your surgeon. Eggs and some milk are likely not getting you anywhere close to protein you need. Where did you have your surgery?

Yes I did get recommendations, but most of the things I don't like, or it upsets my stomach. I got my surgery done at west penn by Dr gange

@@glo61

i just broke a 28 day stall this morning. It is my second large stall since I had my surgery last Sept. This one was tough to break.

The first stall I hit was about a month post op. At the time I was working out 1 hour a day doing cardio. I was only able to get in about 600 - 800 calories but was barely hitting my Protein goal. I was told by both my nut and physical trainer to change my routine. My body had gotten used to it. I was told to try working out every other day for 30 min instead of the hour. I was told to increase my Protein a bit as well. Within 4 days of changing up my routine the weight started coming off rapidly again.

I will tell you that eating potatoes, salad and cereal as your main meals will not help you long term. You MUST hit your protein goals every day and limit yourselflf to good carbs. Salads, vegetables, fruit.< /p>

If you don't do well with meat, try Beans, cheese, nuts &seeds along with eggs, yogurt, cottage cheese and protein shakes. 1 gram of protein for every inch you are tall minimum.

Try some yogurt with high protein granola for Breakfast or cottage cheese.

I am not a huge meat eater myself but I do eat some. As time goes by, you will find the things you are now eating will not control your hunger when it comes back and you will find yourself eating more of it or more often causing grazing. Grazing is what causes people to gain their weight back. Carbs cause you to be more hungry.

This is what I have experienced in my 10 months post op along with a ton of research from doctors, nuts and people who live with WLS everyday.

If you change your routine and increase your protein you will break the stall.

Also, that darn scale will fluctuate all day long every day. Don't let it consume you. With my latest stall I actually avoided it for a while because it was making me a bit down on myself. I am a person who usually weighs daily and usually the fluctuations don't bother me but 28 days was a very big stall for me.

Good luck to you!

Thank you so much Djmohr! You were so helpful! As for the different Proteins I do not like Beans, yogurt, and cottage cheese. nuts and seeds bother my stomach. My main Protein source are my Protein Shakes. I'm going to talk to my personal trainer today and see if we can mix it up. :-) thank you for your advice. I really appreciate it!

I too. Annoy handle meat. I have tried it every way but it pretty much upsets my stomach. I upped my Protein Shakes which gives me 60 grams of Protein and I try to accommodate my diet for the other 20. Keep working at it and you will succeed.

Thanks hikergirl14! I really appreciate the support. That's basically what I'm doing. Hopefully time will tell.

I saw potatoes and cereal and I was kinda shocked. I'm still pre op and surgery in 8 days but the biggest thing I keep hearing is Protein first. And ZERO potatoes. Now I'm from the Midwest so meat and potatoes has been my basic "diet" for years and years - it's how I got to 350 plus pounds to be quite honest. There is no way any of us can lose substantial weight eating a diet to starchy carbs and low protein.

As harsh is this may be to hear, why did you get the surgery if you didn't like meat? I'm not being sarcastic but if I wasn't going to give up candy I certainly wouldn't let anyone surgically cut me up when the deal was give it up.

Toss the cereal and potatoes, replace them with almonds and sunflower seeds, cottage cheese, Swiss cheese, tuna salad, tilapia, shrimp, crab (real not fake), turkey, chicken, beef, yogurt (Greek), etc but ZERO potatoes and cereal.

We are all given a "tool" with this surgery and although this tool can tip the scale into our favor and give us better odds of being smaller and healthier - we ultimately need to take responsibility and stop the insanity "always do what you've always done and you will always get what you've always gotten"

Best of luck, I know you can get on track - that's why we are here.

I feel fortunate that the facility I will be having my surgery seems to have an awesome approach to pre op and post op support, not to mention I was just told both surgeons are in every surgery they do. I felt safer somehow when I was told that.

No potatoes.

Ok first off thank you for the "help". I get it no potatoes! And it's not that I don't like meat, I love meat actually, but I get sick every time I try to eat it. And if you would read my last post I don't like the cottage cheese, yogurt,or the shrimp. I get sick any time I eat ANY type of meat, nuts, seeds, or anything like that. So thank you for your advice. I'm really thinking about deleting this app! This is my first post and I'm getting criticized not the support and advice I thought I would be getting. I can take the tough love, but that's not what I'm getting.

Just remember this is about change. You are going have to be willing to change your eating habits to succeed. It is important to push you limits, try new things and sometimes eat something because it's what you need not necessarily what you like. I am lucky in that i don't have any issues with meat but I still eat for survival/ health now much more than pleasure. Carbs are simply not my friend...protein is. You get search online at all kinds of sites for some great options.

I feel like I've really changed my eating habits. I used to be a junk food junkie. And pop pop and more pop. I don't eat or drink any of that stuff anymore. Along with the processed foods. Nothing like that. I will do more research. Thank you.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.
