When did you start working out again?

Recommended Posts

When did you start working out again after being sleeved? I'm 3 weeks post-op. My surgeon said no exertion until 6 weeks out, but I've heard of some people on here going back to the gym at 3 weeks or so. How much walking were you able to get in before going back to workouts? I'm 23 and at a fairly new job that's over an hour commute from my house (and gym). The 10k steps we're supposed to get a day seem impossible to me right now, time-wise and just weight-wise. Anybody think they did well with workout progression after surgery - if so, how? I.e. you went from almost sedentary to someone who works out regularly?

I started working out exactly three weeks after my surgery. I just did cardio, didn't incorporate strength training until I was about five weeks post op (due to lack of time, not because of my doctor's orders). I was cleared to exercise after two weeks. Good luck! I can't imagine walking is a problem.

Haha! I thought 10,000 steps a day was the norm -- am I totally off? What sort of mileage/step count is everybody trying to do?

doesn't matter what other peoples doc/NUT said

ALWAYS, ALWAYS - only listen to your medical team

other doc might tell their patients with in another time period to exercise

that's ok - other pt needs to follow their docs rules

you'll find all many docs/NUT will give you different responses to things

docs will tell you many other rules too

only listen to your doc :)

(me too of course  )

you'll do great :)

good luck :)

10000 steps a day is what the American Heart Association recommends, but that's alot, especially not long after surgery. Maybe set a lower goal, like 5000 to start and continually raise it as you become more active.

Yeah I thought there was a reason my FitBit app was automatically set to that..... I'm just not sure what a reasonable goal is for now!

How many steps have you been getting around? Nothing wrong with starting small. Then if you find that goals really easy and you're hitting it without having to try too hard, you move it up another 1000. Before surgery I got a fitbit and I was sitting around 7000 steps a day and had to put that extra wall in to reach 10000. It's alot of steps to try getting. Since surgery I haven't been able to get there l. I'm only a week and a half post-op and am still pretty tired and sore so haven't been able to get into tons of walking yet

I was sleeved 5/21 and I just started exercising this week. I decided get a handful of personal trainer sessions so they have adapted the exercising to meet the requirements from my doctor.

@@curlygirl36 That's great! I don't think I could afford personal training sessions but I have a cheap gym membership and lots of areas outdoors where I can walk!

I didn't think I could afford it either but they gave me a good deal for 5 sessions. I figured it was worth asking since I have zero knowledge in a gym.

Yeah I might look into finding a Groupon for some sessions once I get a little further. I want to build up some endurance first! I already find its easier to walk around now and I've only lost a small part of my weight so I'm excited.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

I may have to have gall bladder surgery during my weight loss surgery. Not thrilled about it either but do not want 2 recovery times. Just want it over with.

Thanks for your post. I may need to rethink my decision... :(
