Putting on a few pounds - 2 months post RNY

I am having one of those days that my mind and body is a mess.

I met with my nut last week who said that I should be eating more. I was at 700 a day (2 months out) she said I have to eat 1200 now.

I do get all my Protein and Water in.

I had a big stall 4 weeks out for 3 weeks and since then I have only lost 4 pounds.

The last few days though, I've been putting on nearly a pound a day and I'm absolutely stressing out. I feel all bloated and just want to cry

I don't know if this is normal - it seems unnatural to put on weight, but I'm also thinking how will I lose weight on 1200 calories a day!?

1200 seems reasonable. I would think the malabsorption won't allow all 1200. Are you exercising and choosing good options to his 1200?

Annelisem, I feel where you are coming from....I am 4 weeks post op and I have stall as well when it comes to my weight loss and I hope that it will pick up soon....And I am with you when it comes to getting in the food....I know I can get it between 600-800 a day and exercise all so....

I am choosing good options with this.

I don't get dumping, so I can eat more carby things like muesli or potatoes and Protein bars.

I'm not exercising in the gym yet - I've had a hernia develop over the last few weeks.

But I am walking a lot every day.

Getting stressed out, as I've had a long stall now!! Plus the putting on weight!

I hope this isn't too personal, but are you going to the bathroom ok? I know if I don't eat, drink, and take enough Fiber I will stall and even gain weight. When my digestive tract gets going again I start losing again. I had to increase my calorie intake, too. I was only getting about 600-700 cal per day, and wasn't losing. Increasing it to about 850 a day had worked for me. I've been steadily losing for the past month again. I think you might just have to play around a bit to see what works for you. Hang in there!

I think you become a lot more open after this operation lol!!

I'm going - every other day usually, and usually a couple of times that day for some reason.

I feel like 1200 is too much, 850 would sit better with me as well but my nutritionist said it had to be 1200-1500 calories a day!! It seems like way too much to lose weight!!

My other question was does what you eat have an effect on how much you lose?

For example - if someone only ate chocolate, but had 800 calories a day, would they lose weight?

This doesn't mean I am doing this!... Just how much of an effect does the food we choose effect our weight loss?

@@annelisem my nutritionist taught us that every bite matters! Make sure you're not consuming too much also. And Protein first. There are quite a few people on here that say to put a tight reign on your carbs. My rule with carbs is to eat more Protein than carb. With that said, I'm almost 3mo out from bypass and I have yet to eat Pasta. (My choice)

So quality definitely matters. And food choice is huge! Why fill up on stuff that got us here in the first place? Good luck :-)

That does seem like a lot of calories. And my NUT and program emphasize cutting OUT the carbs as much as possible and focusing on Protein first. We are told to specifically limit winter squashes and potatoes, no rice, no Pasta, no bread. I agree with above poster...why eat the foods that got us here to begin with?

Hi! Here is the other thing I will add to this thread. food choices definately matter. If you eat good Proteins and some good carbs which your brain needs, you will remain fuller for longer periods of time and will likely avoid too much snacking in between. My nut suggested 2 bites of Protein to 1 bite of good carbs. ( good carbs are vegetables and some fruit).

The funny thing is, once you get used to this it is what you crave when you are hungry.

For snacking I focus on cheese, nuts, beef jerkey and lunch meat. After speaking with my nut, she tells me excellent choices for snacking.

I have tried whole grain breads, I no longer like bread of any kind. It just doesn't stay with you very long and then you are hungry again in no time.

Every once in an hike I will eat one or two bites of rice with my Protein. Because I eat my protein first, I really can only take a bite of two. It satisfys my need for that starch without going overboard, same thing with potatoes.

I steer clear of Pasta, I just do not like it anymore and I am Italian. My last meal was spaghetti and meatballs! It is very strange but I am ecstatic about it.

I do believe it is about changing your mindset. I eat 3 meals per day and 2 Snacks if I feel like it. Total calories average between 1000 and 1100.

I don't feel comfortable going above that and I make sure those calories are heavy protein and good carbs.

Something I've noticed, is that every surgeon and nutritionist seems to vary on their advice and requirements a little. My nutritionist told me to shoot for 900-1000 calories per day. I think after I reach my goal weight, that moving up to 1200-1500 calories would seem more reasonable for me. Of course, if I'm exercising more I could probably eat more at that point.

1200 calories seems to be a lot. I am 4 months post op and my average calories per day are 700-800. My goal for Protein at this point is 70 grams per day and I meet that. I've had so many stalls and it is so frustrating. I am not allowed bread or Pasta until I am one year post op. To be honest I don't even miss it. I used to LOVE pasta! I don't eat meat of any kind except for beef Jerky which I can tolerate well. I get my protein from yogurt and Protein Drinks. Seems to be working right now but the weight is coming off slowly now. I have found that it is so hard to find my groove to keep the weight coming off in a good pattern. This journey has been a rollar coaster but I am so glad I did it! Best of luck to you. :)

I'm a little over a year out and am just now able to take in 1000-1200 calories a day. I was like you at that stage I did good to take in 700-800 calories a day. My nutritionist said shoot for 1000 calories a day, but to make sure I was taking in at least 90 grams of Protein a day. Getting your protein first and a few carbs after that is best. I also found that if I didn't drink enough Water I would tend to swell and hold Fluid. Stalls are normal in some cases so try not to panic, when I hit them I track my calories and nutrition and try to tweak anywhere that I'm lacking. My fitness pal app has been a huge help to me. I think it might be down to Water - mostly I get 2 litres in, but there are some days that I only do 3/4 of the target and I feel soooo bloated!!!

I always hit my Protein first, and then do veg then carbs.

The only way I've been able to hit the1200 calories a day is to have peanuts or something to give a big boost. You just feel stupid for eating when you're not hungry!!

I wish there was just 1 set of rules for everyone!! It's all so different!

      Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs. 
      I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm. 
      I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order. 
      My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

      Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
      Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
      A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.

      I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
      Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

      Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
      I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
