Got told by a coworker today that I'm taking the "easy way"

Recommended Posts

I have a question. What if it WAS the easy way out? It isn't but what if it was? WHO CARES. What does he want you to carry a wooden cross across the public square and pay penance for you sin of being overweight? Give me an effing break. This whole notion that fat people are some sort of moral failures is so messed up. If there WAS an overnight pancea that required no surgery and no work on my part, I'd probably use that too. Why is MY BODY someone elses example for moral failing. Your health issues and decisions are none of anyone's freaking business. I think that's why people love that Biggest Loser show. they just love watching us cry, and puke, and basically get whipped and humiliated in public for just existing in these bodies. It makes me very mad.

This is why I chose to tell no one...only my husband knows.....why? Because no one else matters to me...not their opinion or how they view me. I didn't want everyone around me analyzing how much I am losing, or eating, or secretly talking behind my back...my husband is my rock.....he has been with me when I was skinny and fat! To him I was always beautiful. Or so he has said ;) so why would I open the door to un welcome responses and comments from people who truly mean nothing?

Good luck...I'm sorry I ranted on your post...but some people really get me with their whole "easy way out" mentality.....

My old friend Benjamin Franklin once said, "To whom thy secret thou doest tell, to him thy freedom thou doest sell."

Carry your doctor's phone number around in your pocket. When someone puts you down for your decision to have bariatric surgery, give them your doctor's number. Then that a**hat can call your doctor to tell him that he disagrees with the the doctor's diagnosis and treatment for your weight and health issues.

You know they won't do it, but really, why do people feel so casual in commenting about anyone' health choices?

No, it's not so simple.I read somewhere recently that there's evidence that once a body has become obese, it will fight like hell to maintain that weight. Makes sense really as our ancestors grew up in times of feast and famine. Rings true for me having lost the same 60 pounds several times over but never being able to maintain it for more than 6 months. And you're right. Speaking as someone a few years older, I was a pretty healthy fat person in my 30's, but once you hit 40... OMG does the extra weight take its toll! High bp, uncontrolled on 3 meds, high cholesterol, a family trait, breathing issues, pain all over. NOT a good time. ALL of that GONE now with no meds! Then there was the memory of losing my dad to morbid obesity (yep, that was COD on the certificate) when he was 52. This. Disease. Kills. WLS is a way out for some. I'd not call having 80%-90% of one's stomach surgically removed, committing to a lifetime of Protein and Vitamin supplements, losing hair, barfing as you learn where your limits are and committing to exercise should be EASY, but who am I to judge? It sure was WORTH IT!

or if you really want to poke 'em...

"You know, as I consulted my doctor, my therapist, my NP, the surgeon, my nutritionist, something was nagging at me and I finally figured out what it was... YOUR opinion. That's exactly what I was waiting for. So thank you."

:D

Or kick 'em in the junk.

Your choice.

THIS makes my day!

I think the only other thing that upsets me more than hearing that bariatric surgery is 'the easy way out', is when I hear someone refer to weight loss surgery as 'cheating'!!! I agree with all the other posts written here, and I've pretty much come to the conclusion that those who feel this way and voice the foolishness of 'ease' and 'cheating' simply are those who simply are showing their ignorance, since they have never gone through the experience or have lived the life of someone who has made this life saving/life changing decision and has in most cases come out the better for it!!!

Gotta love these people, do they think slim bots come and take over like the body snatchers?? Who do they think does all the work after the surgery? There is nothing easy about this. You know..this is a procedure akin to what they sometimes must do to patients suffering with stomach cancer, who don't have any weight issues and no choice at all. Would that blundering fool say to that person after they returned to work.."hey, your life is so easy, what are you complaining about??" NO! He would be S*** canned! Jer Bear ..I'm so sorry you have to suffer this fool but, just think of his poor wife or girlfriend and that horrible sore foot of his always stuck firmly in his big mouth!

Oh I'm not suffering, if anything, I'm amused by it :)

If I don't see MD, DO, or some other professional, licensed designation behind their name, I ask when will they achieve those designations! That usually stops that. I have had to tell a couple of folks who "figured it out" to f*<%^ off .

To one person I've said, "I don't concern myself worrying about what others think of me because what they think of me is none of my business."

Their reaction was a surprised dear-in-headlights stare. It's fun!

I didn't tell many folks so I don't run into this issue much. A couple folks saw my literature I left out accidentally and guessed.

Oh, & btw, I am much lighter now and healthier than those anti-WLSers who criticized me. :D One even started looking into it.

I had to go to the unemployment office - just moved to NJ and am looking for a job. Had to tell them i couldn't do this required class yet because i had surgery scheduled. She looked at me and said what kind? I was speechless for a moment, wanted to say none of your f##ng business! I just said stomach surgery. Not only is that rude (it wasn't asked nicely) but i think illegal? Grrr

Welcome to Jersey! Lol

Easy?? Grrrrrr I have a intense desire to SMACK that person!!! I am glad that you can let it roll off you, that is the best thing to do :)

I find people that judge generally have a LOT of "issues" with themselves and deflect that onto others!

I am PROUD of my lap band!! I will shout it from roof tops! IF someone doesn't like it or thinks it's an Easy way out they have ZERO knowledge of it and I don't care for their opinion...they can KISS MY Butt!!

I walk away from people who speak like your co worker...I don't listen to idiots...just saying... ;)

JerrBear:

Last night I had my first meal out. While those around me had some luscious, large portions, I ate a small piece of my husband's turkey, a couple of tablespoons of vegetables, and a tablespoon of mashed potatoes. And that was a victory! Easy, my ass! I look at the television commercials and magazines devoted to nothing but food, and realize that I can never view those as pleasure sources again. How is that easy? We chose to confront an addiction that is so socially acceptable, until it shows up on our bodies. As you said, this was a surgery for a life threatening condition! I know that people are talking. Let them talk! You are an incredibly strong person that put your health first. Water on a duck my friend, Water on a duck!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
