How Closely Do You Stick to the Program?

Recommended Posts

I find that I have very little leeway in my "program" although the nutritionist has allowed me more carbs , I don't even touch them if I can help it, I literally maybe once a week will have like a tablespoon of mashed potatoes, or maybe a third of a piece of toast that's about it or one morning I may have 1/4 cup of cheerios for Breakfast, with 1/4 cup of 1% milk. but I haven't done that for about two weeks now, its kind of a oh gosh im going to be late for work kind of thing. but then I have to supplement the Protein. I will say I have a weird weight loss. I go three days a week in a row with no discernible loss then will have 3 or 4 days where I lose 4/5 of a pound and wind up with a 4 to 5 pound loss in the week. But as long as the weight goes down in the end im happy.

When you say 'Drink only what you are supposed to'

What are you go to drinks? I'm very over Water and want other options! What are some options?

I only drink Water and coffee. But a lot of people do tea or do water additives like Crystal Light, Mio, etc. As long as it's sugar-free.

With clean eating my motto is 90/10. So 90% of the time I drink water or my Protein shakes. I have coffee maybe twice a week and on occasion I will have fruit juice or tea. I gave up sodas 4 years ago and I like how my body responds to being well hydrated. My skin is clear, I am never constipated and I rarely get hungry between meals. I don't use water additive because I am allergic to food dyes and artificial sweeteners.

Pretty much the only thing I have trouble keeping up with is my vitamins/calcium. I bought one of those 4-a-day pill containers (it's the size of a small phone book lol) but I still forget to take roughly 8-10 of the 42 Calcium citrate pills each week and roughly 2-3 of the 14 Multivitamins.

Food: Not really hungry, so I eat because I'm supposed to

Protein: Trying hard to get my 80g/day in but probably getting closer o 70 on average

Liquids: 64oz is not a problem, definitely doing at least that much

I cheated once (two days ago) when I ate a small piece of pizza as I was wrapping up the kids' leftovers. Other than that, haven't even been tempted to cheat.

I'm down 56 pounds since my high on November 27th. Surgery was on 1/13 and I've lost over 35 since then.

I'm not sure what you mean by "stick to the program". I am not on a "diet" so there's nothing to stick to and no guilt for the occasional indulgence. I eat well\clean\healthy, (whatever you like to call it) about 80% of the time, choose Protein first, take my supplements, (including Protein supplements to get me to 75g per day), weigh once per week and exercise regularly.

"Sticking to the program" doesn't mean a diet in any way, shape or form. It simply refers to eating the recommended foods your nutritionist has suggested, taking your supplements and exercising. Of course most of this is a lifestyle change. I full understand this for the rest of my life. However, there is a difference in what I did pre-WLS. Before surgery I took a multi-Vitamin once a day and Biotin for my hair. I know take 2 multi's, Biotin, D3, calcium citrate and B12. Before surgery I aimed for 50gms of protein a day and the only worry I had about carbs was making sure I was eating complex carbs more than I ate simple, "white" carbs. Before surgery I worked out 3 - 4 times a week, now I work out 5 - 6 times a week. It doesn't mean I don't have a piece of chocolate on occasion. I do, but I was able to implement the occasion treat into my diet prior to WLS. I don't think anyone here is discussing guilt over the occasional indulgence, but some have admitted that they aren't consistent with things like drinking enough Water, getting enough protein or taking their supplements/vitamins.

More than I ever thought I would have, anything off the plan gives me horrible stomach aches or.dumping syndrome. And I listen to my body when it's hungry I feed it. Thirsty I drink. Headaches are a sign I'm not meeting my nutrition. It's a good life though, not living to eat. Haven't hit any stalls and my nutritionist says its because I DO indulge ONCE in a while. I've developed lactose intolerance so my milkshake days are over but I love love love fresh fruit! My whole attitude has changed towards food. I hate lol! But it's what i needed to be successful.

:D I'm 9 months out and I eat pretty regularly. I avoid fatty and spicy foods but still eat some candy  I walk a mile every day and roller skate every weekend. I still do eat my Protein first and I can never eat anything else......sighing* I do not count everything any more. I'm only 5 pounds from my goal, and if I didn't loose any more I would be fine with it. I'm very petite now and my hubby is happy, he thinks he got a new wife lol! but my scale is still slowly going down  I went from a size 22 pant size to a 3 so I'm very happy where I'm sitting at. :D

I am really good about taking my M-F AM pills. I forget on the weekends and my PM pills. I just set a recurring alarm on my cell phone. One labeled PM meds and one labeled AM meds. I am taking Actigall at night so really don't want to miss that too much. I would like to avoid gallstones. I am going to throw a few pills in my purse in case I am not home when my alarms go off.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
