Never thought I'd consider cosmetic surgery

Recommended Posts

But.. was sleeved mid Nov. Down (remarkable) 83 lbs... been eating per nutritionist and working out... at least 5 times a week... (swimming) have TONS TONS of energy... but obviously have saggy skin... seems a shame to feel so great... and have saddle bags! Any thoughts on Lipo... Tummy Tuck? Non evasive procedures? Freezing? Deep ultra sound? Aka. Lipo blast plus? Any thoughts most appreciated

If you can afford it, and it will make you feel better, I say go for it. Sorry I don't have anything more to offer on this topic :)

Get to goal, and get consults.

People tell you that body wraps, lotions and voodoo dolls will shrink skin, but the truth of the matter, is if you have alot of skin it won't "snap back" because it is stetched beyond it's healthy point. When I was 22 I lost about 70# and could wear a bikini without cosmetic surgery. That was then, this is now... after losing 160+ from sleeve (more like 185 from lifetime high) and being middle aged - I needed skin removal and reconstruction to get rid of the skin.

It is still better to be fit and have skin then to have that skin stuffed with fat!

Saggy skin won't be resolved with Lipo or any of the "non-invasive" treatments you mentioned. Depending on how much of it there is and where it is, you will probably have to look into actual skin removal surgeries. I agree that you should wait until you are at goal and maintaining there for a bit. That way you can get work done based on your "final" results. Unless of course the skin is physically preventing you from working out or interfering with your daily life, in which case you might need to address it sooner in order to keep progressing on your journey.

In the mean time, there are a few things you can do that *might* help a little. Stay well hydrated. Take Vitamin C and Beef Gelatin supplements. Moisturize daily. And do strength training/toning in the areas where you have loose skin so that maybe some muscle can fill in where the fat used to be.

What does help with the loose skin while your still losing and makes your workouts a little less jiggley, is compression shirts and or bottoms. I have used the basic ones like UnderArmor and the more radical ones like 2XU and they work great. Keeps things firm and doesn't restrict your movement. Also helps with muscle recovery after the workouts.

As said above, you need to wait on the plastics for farther down the road...... ;)

I am 14 month put from getting sleeved. Down 145 and just had Tummy Tuck done a week ago. Insurance covered alot of the cost as a life changing event. I only paid 3000. Could of been worse .and amazingly I've had lil pain and don't regret doing it. Just upset I have to sit out of the gym for a few weeks.

So, this is gonna sound stupid, but...

I bought a pair of compression pants, that feel great, and do hide the loose skin when I run at the gym, but I feel uncomfortable wearing them in public, so i wear sweat pants on top to cover them up. What is acceptable, wear them plain, under shorts, or keep wearing the sweats? I'm down from a 44" waist to a 32", from a XXL tshirt to a M, but I still feel like a fat kid trapped in a skinny body, still feel like everyone is looking at me, thinking 'What is that fat guy doing at the gym'.

I never thought I would consider it either but now that I am dragging skin behind me I have no choice. I hope insurance will cover at least some of it.

If it were me I would wait until you hit goal before doing. There could be more loose skin to come yet.

I am attending a seminar this Tuesday night to see what it is all about. Good Luck!

Thanks for the info about the compression clothes, never would have thought of that.

My insurance co. covers plastics for loose skin that is causing issues (rash, tears, etc.).

They even have a surgeon that offers a discount to patients with a referral from the bariatric office!

  • cube68 I found Nike has compression shorts covered by a bigger outer short. That's what I'm wearing in this picture. No jiggle, don't have to show the world everything ;-)

Cube68, did respectably well, ran the whole thing, ran 7 minutes faster than the average runner in the race (there were over 2000). Good luck on yours.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
