hospital stay and back to work

Recommended Posts

I know everyone is different and I have the recommendation from the dr but I am wondering about your actual experience. I am having gastric bypass March 4. How long was your hospital stay and when did you feel ok to go back to work?

Everyone IS different. My experience--I think I stayed in the hospital for 2 days and then went home. I stopped taking the pain meds pretty quickly because they were making me nauseous so I actually felt better without them AT HOME. I took the following week off from work and then worked from home the week after that. In retrospect, I think I could have gone back to work sooner but there are a couple of things to consider--you are really tired from all that "healing" stuff! lol. And, it takes a while to get familiar with what to be eating so it is easier to handle that in your own home. I have a desk job which I can do from home if I need to.

My hospital stay was overnight and I was back to work in 3 weeks. My job is 90% desk though.

Best of luck on your surgery! Best decision ever!

I had a sleeve gastrectomy with hiatal hernia repair on a Tuesday, I stayed overnight 2 nights, went home Thursday, rested over the weekend and was back at work Monday with no problems. I work a desk job. I felt fine, I would have felt like I was wasting paid time off if I stayed home any longer.

I had surgery on a Tuesday at 1pm and was discharged Wednesday at 7pm. The current plan is to have four weeks off from my (office) job, though it may stretch to six weeks. I'm in week three now, and won't know about back-to-work clearance until I see the surgeon on Feb 2. At this point there's no pain keeping me from working - just a lack of stamina and amount of effort on learning to eat and exercise and manage the new digestive system.

I think you'll get a different answer to this question from every person you ask. Our answers vary based on each person's healing and health and level of physical effort in our jobs, of course, but also on our financial and employment situations. I have full 100% pay on short-term disability leave for up to 3 months, so the only things pressuring me to get back to the grind are my darn midwestern work ethic and the fact that I love my job. :)

I was in the hospital for two days and returned to work in a week. I planned to take 2 weeks, but I felt really good, so I went back early

I may also add that I left the hospital with no pain meds. It is my doctors practice to not prescribe pain meds, he says that if you need them, you should stay in the hospital.

I had surgery on 1/6, stayed 2 nights in the hospital, and was back to work on 1/21. I was definitely tired back at work the first few days. I am a teacher and ended up sitting a lot more than I normally would. I feel much better this week and am almost back to my normal self at work.

My surgery is later this week and I'm *hoping* for a long weekend of recovery, then back to work since I'm self-employed as a freelance writer/home officed. So that part is great, can work in my jammies or sweats if I need to, easy to do my own food here and can take a break if needed. That said, I have clients and deadlines that depend on me -- they are all very understanding, but in my world, deadlines are deadlines -- I've done as much work ahead as humanly possible, but am very stressed about that --

1 night, no pain meds sent home. Went back to work on day 8. Should not have. I teach college and didn't want to miss classes. I sat during class for a week. Driving to school was the worst part.

I did not have ports which I think also makes a difference in the time frame for many people.

Hi I had surgery on a Monday and was released that Wed, all the gas came out that Friday and I was walking and improving everyday, I do believe that I could have went back to work that Monday but I stayed home until I had my two week check up and then I return back to work. I have a very demanding job but I was ready for it. I had no complications and my husband and family were great. After my 6 week check up I was approved to exercise and I began exercising three times per week and then went up to 5 days per week. I have had no complications and no problems. Good luck and congrats on your choice on being healthy.

In hospital 2 nights, took 2 weeks off of work. That was perfect for me. I think If I had gone back any earlier I would have been too tired.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
