Newbie...Did any of you go through pre-surgery jitters?

Recommended Posts

Don't get me wrong, I'm super excited. I hoping I don't get to the day of surgery and get scared. Did any of you have pre-surgery jitters?

Of course! Right up until they knocked me out! Best thing I ever did!

I think we all go through jitters. If we have done our homework, we know what to expect and can go into it with a higher degree of confidence than had we not done our homework. Good luck to you! I am 3 mos. out and doing fine.

Oh yeah I had the jitters. I think its normal so be strong. I'm 4 days out today and can say that it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be. Read all you can about what to expect and it will help a lot.

I had one day of jitters. Well, part of a day. It was the last day of all shakes and everything had been going super. I actually liked the prep diet (for me it was 4 weeks) for the most part, except that toward the end the shakes got to tasting or smelling like Protein all the time. Well, the last night before the 24 hours of Clear Liquids only part, I got to thinking about Moes cuz I used to pic that up on the way home if I had a really late stressful day at work. All I could think about was that I'd never be able to eat a cup of queso and chips due to the size/quantity. It kind of freaked me out because I'd been so excited and ready, but all of a sudden I was worrying over some dang chips and cheese. Thankfully the next morning I woke up with a better attitude and got sleeved the next day.

Well, yeah! I didn't tell anyone about my surgery, including the person who dropped me off at the hospital entrance. Only said I was going in for ambulatory procedure, so I was playing it off like it was a no big deal day. Once I was with the nurse, I was a complete mess. The crying every few minutes continued until I was given my wonderful valium pills. It's surgery. Not to be nervous, to me, wouldn't be normal. But everyone is different. Best.

I'm a weirdo. I have this thing where I have to research things before hand. I did a lot of investigating beforehand. I looked at 2 different hospitals/programs before I decided on one. I talked to friends who had WLS. The surgeon I ended up choosing had done a friend of mine the year before. I then did everything I could to ensure a positive outcome even down to making sure I had a living will updated and on file with the hospital. By the time my surgery came around I said a prayer and was ready to go. No nerves or jitters. I had done all I could do to be safe. I was ready.

I think it helped that I previously worked as a Child Life Specialist and for many years it was my job to explain medical procedures to children and families. When they couldn't get a vein for the IV I knew it was because I was slightly dehydrated from being NPO the day before surgery. I knew what a PICC line was. I knew and practiced deep breathing and relaxation techniques any time I had to undergo challenging medical procedures. I think these things all kicked in kind of automatically for me.

YES! I am one week away and my anxiety level is at about a 9. I was approved for this a few years ago and chickened out once, I'm forcing myself to go through with this no matter what. I have "control " issues..lol.. and this will be my first surgery so I am leary of being put under and what not. Good luck everybody!

Heck yes! Hell, I was crying as they wheeled me to the OR. It's scary stuff. Just be sure to prepare everything for when you're out of surgery. Have laundry done, groceries bought, house clean. Try to learn as much as you can about the procedure and the recovery. All of these things helped me ease my nerves in the final days before surgery.

BAD! I am having surgery 12/16/14 and I am so nervous it's crazy! I think it's because I work on the surgical floor that cares for all the post op sleeve patients including the ones who have negative experiences. I just cared for a patient who had a VERY bad group of issues related to her sleeve and it was MY surgeon. Now I am freaked out beyond belief. Prayers would be greatly appreciated. I'm the only parent and my kids need me in tip top shape asap! :)

Doing extensive research before surgery had absolutely nothing to do with my extreme nervousness. I started my research October 2012 and had my consultation April 2014. My surgeon was super impressed with my knowledge about all of the procedures. I was a nervous reck because I was about to have surgery, period! At my third c section, I was more nervous than at my second. New the baby had to come out, but didn't want to be in that OR! Was crying like a big baby. So for my sleeve, I let it be known I needed some anxiety drugs. Don't feel bad about being nervou. That's a very normal reaction. Ask for some anxiety meds. Infact discus it with the anesthesiologist at the pre op visit. Lost of people on this board, including me, was given something to relax before surgery. Best.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
