Lower-end BMI Sleeve Surgery. Any others?

Hi katyh2015, unfortunately it's REALL Y boring!!

I have a hard boiled egg and 1/2 avocado for Breakfast. Or hard boiled with homemade refried or whole pinto Beans.

Mid morning is more Protein (hard boiled egg, or chicken, or protein bar)

lunch is more protein and vegetables (chicken or lean steak, whatever fresh or cooked vegetables, maybe the other half of avocado,

Mid afternoon snack is almonds and a baby bell, or Protein Bar (quest bar), or cottage cheese

dinner again is more protein - (chicken, steak, pork) vegetables again.

Evening snack - almonds, meat, baby bell, or Protein Shake, or boiled egg, or cottage cheese.

Now I only eat 1 Quest bar in a day. Sometimes I just eat half and eat the other half later. I will likely add a fruit back in at the end of my 4 weeks, but then again the weight is now melting off again - maybe I'll just wait.

I grilled up a whole bag of those chicken breast cutlets yesterday. That will last me a couple days. I cooked 5 of them in the crock pot with homemade salsa and had spicy shredded chicken. I rub olive oil on the meat before I cook it. And sometimes I put shredded cheese onto my vegetables (about 1 tablespoon)

I have just one crystal light caffeine pouch in the morning and Water with stevia lemon drops the rest of the day.

I lost another pound from yesterday. I'm only 6.5 months out. I only lost 3lbs in December, 2 in Jan, 1-2 in Feb, and 1 in March before I started. I've now lost 6 pounds since speaking with my NUT in the middle of March. And like I said, I'm working out much less, and actually consuming more calories.

Thank you so much for this thread, OP! It has made me feel a TON better!

I was sleeved on 1/21/15 and while I gained TEN pounds in the hospital due to being pumped with fluids and inflammation, I lost those pounds within two days of being home. My starting weight was 228, DOS weight 212. By week 3, I had lost thirteen pounds and FINALLY dipped into one-derland.

As of today, I'm a little over three months out and weight 186.6. I was fighting depression the last few weeks that my weight loss compared to that of others was on the low side. I was convinced I was doing something wrong, but a wise person on the boards told me that the closer our BMIs get to the ideal range, the slower the weight loss is. I'm losing about 1.5 pounds per week since the dreaded Weeks 3-5 stall.

My doctor cleared me for full cardio and weights at the gym two weeks ago and I've only made it to a handful of classes due to exams, but now will be able to go at least 3 days a week for a cardio day, arms day, and kickboxing day. I'm hoping that helps me lose a little more.

On the upside, even if I can boost myself to 2.5-3 pounds a week (which I'd LOVEEEEE and be totally happy with), I think my weight loss will be slow enough to avoid loose skin, especially in light of my age.

How've you all been doing lately? Has anyone found that starting back up at the gym help kick your weight loss a little more in gear?

I have been stalled for 4 weeks. I think I have been doing the wrong things too. I am only getting about 800 calories but I often slip in a bite of something else here and there. I am starting this week on serious low carb. Protein first.

My new goal is too start with Protein, then veggies, skip the fruit for a little bit and then see if I have room for the carb/starch that is available. I tried this with Easter dinner last night and seriously if I hadn't made myself because it tasted so good, I wouldn't have even had room for those 3 bites of mashed potatoes I had. I also know I need to up my Water intake too but sometimes it feels so hard, like I'm eating or drinking something all day and how do I have time to do anything else!?!?!

I'm 5 months postop. Had BMI of 31. I've lost 31.5 pounds. This last month I've only lost a pound. I'm 4 pounds away from a normal BMI and 14 away from goal.

I had a bmi of 35 on the day of surgery which was a month ago. I have lost 25lbs so far including pre op and 18lbs since surgery. I am now in the three week stall which is soooo frustrating! I am hoping things will start moving this week! I also didn't feel any restriction when I was on the liquid phase...I have just started softs and I can definitely feel it now! Well done everyone on all the lbs lost!! X

Anyone have any experience with UHC if you are on the lower end? I am BMI 35 with high BP and pre diabetic.

I have to do 6 months of dieting. If I lose too much, will I be denied?

Hi everyone! This is my first post and I was just sleeved on June 9th. I weighed in at 201, but Im a shorty at 5'1. I just got home from the hospital yesterday and was experiencing alot of gas pains in the upper region of my stomach. I started to walk and they've subsided but are still there. I just keep telling myself, everyday its going to get better.

My surgical scars are little, so tht makes me very happy. I prolly have stretch marks bigger than the incision marks! I know that people with a lower bmi tend to loose weight slower , and Im ok with that. Its prolly better that way so that i can tone and loose at the same time.

Drinking is uncomfortable at this point as I feel everything go down. I drink very, very, slowly.. I think today I was actually able to get 8oz of liquids in. Mainly my Vitamins . I have yet to get any Protein, but will try in an hour.

Im so excited that this is the beginning of something great for us!

My BMI was around 32 when I took the surgery.

I lost 30 lbs over the last 10 weeks (I have been told we will loose very slow comparing to others and I have no problem with that).

I have 30 lbs to loose to reach my goal weight.

Good luck all.

I also had a low bmi when I had the sleeve done in December 2015 -bmi was 30. Today my bmi is 25 and I'm losing to much weight. I'm never hungery and can not eat a lot of anything

When the dr did the surgery he keep the stomach larger than others, when I say him last week he is concerned about the rapid weight loss

I'm starting to think this surgery was NOT meant for people with low bmi and that's why the insurance companies have the requirements they do

I had my surgery Jan 9th. I had a BMI of 29 at the time. Today I'm down to a BMI of 24. I also haven't lost much of any weight in the last 3 months, maybe a couple pounds, but I'm back to working out 5-6 times a week quite intensely (burning a minimum 500 calories in 60 minutes), and my strength is increasing so I'm sure I'm gaining muscle which is why the scale hasn't moved much lately. I'm okay with that, and to be honest I haven't stepped on the scale for at least 2 or 3 weeks.

Some days I feel like I could eat a horse. I can only eat small portions, but sometimes an hour later I'm hungry again. Other days I could prob go all day and just have 3 Protein shakes and be fine. I think a lot has to do with hormones and it really is a head game. Days I'm bored I eat a lot more than the days I'm busy and don't have time to think about food.

I'd still like to get down to a BMI of 21-22, but for once in my life I feel like I don't need to diet. I try and eat healthy during the week, but on the weeks I'll have some chips and guacamole if I want, or some crackers and hummus. The difference is I can only eat a handful or two now, whereas before I could eat a full bag, and had no self control, hence why I was overweight. I'm sure I would have lost more weight by now if I was a little more strict, but it's so nice to be able to have a social life and enjoy food again without the guilt that always followed in the past!

I'm just shy of 3 weeks pre-op. After a lifetime of battling to get healthy I was at HW 237 back in 2011. Lost 80 lbs with exercise, whole grains, lean Protein, healthy fats, no sweeteners. Felt and looked fantastic. Since then have battled up and down 20, 30, 50 pounds at a time, at this point I've regained 60 of those 80 lbs. Two friends had the sleeve in Mexico with Dr. Fernando García. One is 3 years post. Both say it was the best decision they ever made. One's husband had the sleeve 6 months after his wife.

Both of them were lower BMI and self pay. I've watched the process and marveled at their results and decided to go for it. My BMI was a hair under 30 when I decided to go forward. There is a 30 BMI threshold and I am worried I could fall below. So I gained a little more weight to 31 for a cushion.

Cost is $4,500, or $5,500 for single incision, which I am going to have. He goes in through the belly button with minimal visible scar. I'm not planning on a bikini, but I figure there will be fewer sites to heal, and why not be vain about my tummy.

There was no need to wait for a surgery date, I could have scheduled as soon as I wanted. With low BMI I have no pre-diet, just 24 hours Clear liquids and 8 hours no intake at all.

My scheduling challenge was convincing my wife to let go of her fears for my safety. Now she is considering having the sleeve herself if it goes well for me. She would qualify with insurance, so might have a different experience.

My co-morbidities are not life threatening. They decrease my quality of life. Back pain, minor urinary incontinence, knee and ankle pain. I wake up 3-7 times per night--very curious to see if that clears up.

I'd love to lose quickly. That isn't my important goal. My goal isn't losing. My goal is maintaining a healthy weight. I've always been able to lose quite well (getting harder now as I passed 50 a couple of birthdays ago.) I have NEVER been a stable weight in my life.

I am so excited at the prospect of having a single clothing size in my closet! (Maybe 2, since brands vary.). There are things I won't bother buying because I can't justify the expense since I won't fit in them for long. That could change.

My biggest fear is sliding even after the sleeve. I hear a lot of "these pounds are gone forever!" That will only be true if we hold to healthy food and beverage patterns forever.

It's clear from my reading and YouTube watching--people who establish and maintain healthy habits get great results. People who don't, don't. Simple equation I want to be on the right side of.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
