Do you eat oatmeal?

Recommended Posts

oatmeal has never been a favorite food of mine. In fact, I've tried it many times in the past and gagged on it every time. I think it's mostly a texture thing. Anyway, my tastes have changed a lot over the last year and I find that I like a lot of foods now that I would've never eaten before. I try new foods all the time and even enjoy trying foods that I always disliked because, more often than not, I'm pleasantly surprised and find that I now like those foods. So while grocery shopping this morning, I picked up a box of the Quaker instant oatmeal with added protein(banana nut flavor). I hadn't eaten anything yet so I decided to try it when I got home. It actually tasted pretty good to me! It has 10 grams of Protein and I used 3/4 cup of skim milk so that adds another 6 grams of protein. I don't like it to be cooked to the point of being gooey and sticky though because then, I will start gagging. So the way I made it, it's kind of thin. I'm not sure this is a good idea though because it seems that would make it a slider food? It filled me up though so I don't know. Do you eat oatmeal? If so, what consistency do you make yours? I guess I may just have to try it a few times and see how full I feel after eating it and how long before I'm hungry again. It still isn't something I would want to eat more than once a week but it would be something different.

I love oatmeal and like it as grainy as possible. However, as much as I love it, I can't eat it for Breakfast. There is something about it that messes with my blood sugar, and always have a hypoglycemic episode within 1.5-2 hours after eating it. Annoying... Even if I have a little bit with an egg, I react to it. Egg alone, no problem :-)

It really is interesting how our tastes change over time. There are certain things that I used to love, and now I'm turned off to them. And the other way around.

I'm exactly the same way! One of the strangest things for me is that I used to love potato chips. I HATE them now! I can't stand the feeling of the grease on my tongue. And vegetables- I used to HATE vegetables. Now, I LOVE vegetables and crave them the way I used to crave potato chips!

I eat it too and like 3 of you, I don't like it real mushy. I buy the thicker oats in a box and I'll add some steel cut oats from Sprouts to make it even more chewy/grainy. I add applesauce, cinnamon and a little sweetener. And yes, it's a slider food but that's why we were banded, so we could still eat the foods we liked but in smaller quantities.

I eat instant oatmeal every morning just about. I love it sticky and gooey, but that's just me! I noticed also that I can no longer eat salads. Get stuck every time. I used to love salads! Just one of the many changes that came along with the lap band and my new way of life! Cheers! :D

I don't eat salads because my surgeon told me not to. Salads are usually mostly iceberg lettuce, which has very little nutritional value and is mostly Water so it can leave you feeling hungry sooner than necessary. The biggest reason he says no salads though is even if you have a healthy salad with mixed greens, spinach, and veggies, most people will make it unhealthy by smothering it in croutons, Salad Dressing, cheese, bacon bits, etc. I DO eat lots of raw veggies such as green & red bell peppers, cauliflower, broccoli, celery, carrots, cucumbers, and tomatoes. I frequently dip them in ranch dressing but I measure it so that I don't overdo it. I either eat those things as a snack or, if I have them with a meal, I eat some sort of Protein first.

I make meatloaf with oatmeal -- works great. And now that the cold months are here we will have oatmeal here and there. I like the chewy oatmeal also......but I don't have much due to carbs, etc. I tend to add maple Syrup. Yum!

I quit eating McDonalds salads years ago. I swear they must use some weird preservative because they have always messed up my tummy.

McDonald's oatmeal rocks! I eat 1/2 a portion unsweetened - the apples and raisins - usually without milk. I also cook steel cut oats and add chia and hemp seeds to it also adding Trader Joes orange flavoured cranberries - I usually add a little milk to it

I used to love oatmeal but when Ive tried it after the band its been uncomfortable, i think because the grains continue to swell? Anyway, instead ive been making healthy granola which is great, and i also add a little oats to Soup for a little texture sometimes. As far as i know oats are high in Protein for a grain so worth experimenting with!

I loved oatmeal before my sleeve, ate it everyday while nursing my son! So I wanted to try it again post op and it was difficult and dissapointing to say the least. I bought the Kelloggs Nourish hot Cereal but I have to make it very thin and it's uncomfortable to eat ????. I will keep trying here and there especially because now that it's getting colder, I am freezing all of the time and miss the warmth of oatmeal.

Fast food places wash produce in preservatives -- I'm sensitive to that stuff and can taste it immediately. Yuck. FIT is a product that has a consumer version and one for "restaurants" (McDonald's, etc.)......

I cant eat oatmeal or eggs or most Breakfast foods in the AM, they either swell up or get stuck. But for some reason I don't have as many problems In the evening. I haven't tried oatmeal in a few years, but I had breakfast for dinner tonight with no problems. ( 1/2 an egg, 1 pc bacon, 1/2 small potato. ) I'll have to try oatmeal some evening !

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
