Why do some surgeons require pre op diet and others don't?

Recommended Posts

I've noticed so many on here saying they had two week pre op diet. And then others don't. Has anyone been told to do the preop diet and not been a good patient and didn't so it? I'm having problems sticking to mine. But worried about repercussions during surgery.

My surgeon said that the reason for the preop diet was to shrink my liver. He said that if the liver was not small enough he would close me back up and not perform the surgery. After hearing about that happening, as well as stories from folks who havw has liver damage from surgery I think I will have enough incentive to stick to preop diet. Fortunately, it is not as draconion as some (mine is Meal Replacement shakes and protein...no extra carbs).

My surgeon and my husband's surgeon (we had diff procedures

With diff surgeons) said the same thing - reducing the size of the liver. They have to lift it to get to the stomach.

My surgery is on the 3rd October but I was curious about the procedure and watched a video in YouTube. I see them lift the liver and can understand it can be more difficult if it's not shrunk. If you think it may put you off your surgery please don't watch it although I found it more interesting then off putting. Not sure about you guys but my doc is giving me a DVD of the surgery :)

My surgeon's office will require a 1 day pre-op the day before my surgery.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
