When do I eat?!?!?!

Recommended Posts

I am 3 days post op. Feeling good, small amount of discomfort, but overall good. My problem is I'm not hungry and when I do eat I don't get a full feeling or maybe I do, but don't recognize it. Will this change? I'm having a hard time getting all my fluids in. I can get in 2 oz at a time. I'm freaked out about not recognizing the full feeling. I don't want to cause a leak by over doing it.

Congratzies on your sleeve! Also so glad you're feeling dandy.

What are you eating? Keep in mind that less-than-solid foods (like Protein shakes, oatmeal, cottage cheese, etc.) tend to move through quite quickly.

I was a little disturbed at first because my post-op liquid diet (including the dreaded Jello) seemed to move through quite quickly. Even purees moved through more than I was expecting. However, some solids made a big difference and I actually overate and slimed a few times. Hello! Rude awakening...but it was great negative reinforcement.

If you said you can get 2oz of fluids at a time...then what is stopping you from drinking more? Do you feel uncomfortable at that point?

On the liquid diet you aren't going to any more "full" than you do with Water. So just "eat" on a schedule. I had a Protein shake for Breakfast, strained Soup for lunch, and another Protein Shake for dinner. I didn't bother with "snacks" like Jello or popsicles, because I wasn't hungry and they have no calories, so what's the point?

I just started pureed foods and I definitely get a full feeling from things like scrambled eggs, cottage cheese, tuna salad, etc.

My doc said to make sure you sip, drink every 15 min at least 1-2 oz. Focus on hydration for first two weeks...add Protein as possible but hydration most important.

Main thing, get your Water in, you do not want to get dehydrated, drink as often as you can. As far as "eating", are you on a liquid diet? Try to get your Protein in at meal times, it'll help for later, you'll feel the restriction when you start on solid foods. Good Luck.

Staring at a big glass of Water, knowing you should be drinking it, can be daunting!

One of the suggestions made by my NUT for the liquid phase was as follows:

Drink 4 ounces of Protein shake on the even hour of the day, Then 4 ounces of Water or Fluid on the odd hours. By the end of the day you will have 32 ounces of each. It was the way I was able to meet Fluid and Protein requirements early on.

Thank you so much for the insight. I'm currently on full liquids. I'm suppose to have my 3 meals and shakes in between. That just seems like way much. After 2oz I start burping and get gas discomfort in my chest. I have to walk after everything I take in. How long did you guys have gas discomfort if any?

That is completely normal and exactly how I felt. It's what makes getting all your Water such a challenge. I would march in place in my living room while drying to drink Water. That feeling lasted a little over a week for me, maybe 9 days. I still got after that, but not as often. So not with every single sip anymore. It gradually gets less and less, though I do still get it (20 days post-op), usually first thing in the morning, when I take my first few sips of water.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
