Have your preferences for food changed?

Recommended Posts

Notice I said "preferences," and not "choices." I know I'm going to have to make different choices after surgery, but someone I know who was sleeved said that his preferences changed a lot. Foods he loved he no longer desires and foods he didn't care for before surgery are his new favorite. Am I still going to like pizza? ? I don't want to say good-bye!

I lost all cravings for sweets. I think that is a good thing except sometimes Protein Drinks are a bit too sweet. I also cannot stand eggs, just the thought of them. I can cook a recipe with them but not just eat an egg, no matter how it is cooked. I probably could still eat some pizza but haven't had any. LOL

Say goodbye to pizza because it's better for you if you don't crave it and bad for your body.

Yes my food preferences changed a lot and for the good. I lived off of chicken wings, literally ate them almost every day. Now when I think of how much fat is in them it literally makes my stomach turn. We use to be a huge carbs family and now I haven't touched rice since before my surgery.

I also notice that if I skip a day of exercising I start to feel lazy and almost want to turn to comfort foods. So I do my best to get in exercise every single day, usually for me that means walking a mile at minimum. It helps me to keep on track for the rest of the day with my food intake and it makes me feel better during the day and have a clearer mind.

I'm sorry to admit that my cravings for sweets are worse than ever. Raging sweet tooth. My herbal tea can't be sweet enough. I switched to natural zero-calorie sweeteners to be kinder to my gut bacteria, but I crave just as badly. I know there's all sorts of brain chemistry and hormonal stuff going on about it, but I'm just not ready to tackle that beast yet. Soon.

Ava324, that's why my friend said! He wasn't a sweets eater before but now he craves them. On the other hand, he used to eat chicken wings, fried chicken, anything chicken, and now he cannot bear the thought of chicken! I'm also not a sweets eater, so I'm very curious about what post-surgery will be like.

I still love all my old favorites, but I do find myself seeking out healthy foods I never really bothered with before. I do indulge in pizza, baked goods, chocolate, deserts and alcohol on occasion but I don't really crave any of them. The biggest addiction I've developed is for mixed nuts and Peanut Butter. Gotta have a bit everyday or I start "jonesin"

I wouldn't worry about your tastes changing. If you don't like pizza postop then you won't miss it. I'm actually excited about all the new foods I've discovered and prefer to eat over the chips and candy and fried junk I used to eat (and love) everyday.

Oh my goodness, Tuesday! Breathe, breathe . . . I can't even imagine how nervous I'm going to feel! I'm sure you're excited, too! Please come back on here and let me know if your food preferences change. I know--it'll be awhile. You'll have to follow that clear liquid for a few weeks. Good luck!! I wish you the best!

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
