Any Born Again Christians?

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone, I was just curious......

Are there any other born again Christians out there who have had WLS? I have not had my surgery yet but was wondering if there were others out there who share my faith. How they might have wrestled with having the surgery in the first place? That kind of thing. Thanks for your input :)

What is the difference between a born again christian and a christian?

LovedXJesus- I am a follower of Christ and I certainly prayed and was seeking God's will both regarding my previous weight loss attempts and regarding surgery.

I believe that God has gifted mankind with medical treatment to help to mitigate the pain of living in a fallen world.

I'm very much looking forward to being able to serve God with more energy in my new body.

Best to you on your journey. I'll be praying for God to give you discernment regarding the decision.

I do consider myself a Christian, I have personal relationship with God. I too prayed about the surgery and asked God if it's His will that everything would go through with my insurance because I wouldn't be able to afford the out of pocket expenses. I waited for my approval and received the call on the 27th of the 30 days that I was told that it could take. I thanked The Lord and cried tears of joy. I feel even more blessed that God allowed me such a chance to become healthier. I also prayed that my new life style change wouldn't interfere with neither my thoughts or my husband although I met him at a way smaller weight, it's been a while and he's just as excited. My date is scheduled for September 26, 2014. I pray that all goes well with you:)

I am a pastor - and had weight loss surgery. While I don't share the how - I do share the weight loss. It made me healthy again. The question of how does faith interfere with the decision process to me is like asking a cancer patient if they are gonna do chemo if they are a christian. What does that have to do with it?

Good answer Pastor. I believe that God gave the doctors the ability to help patients in ALL aspects.

I'm a born again Christian and wrestled with my weight for years, had uncontrollable diabetes, sleep apnea, high blood pressure. High cholesterol, name it I had it! I prayed and stood on my faith! I had surgery and I can't begin to tell you how it changed my life! God used the doctors to keep me whole!!! I have no regrets and thank Him for what he has done!

Thank you to everyone out there for their input. I think what I feel is that I would be able to do this without surgery if I had enough faith. I struggle with that. I really want to have the surgery, but like Waitingtoexhale, I only want to do what the Lord blesses. Thank you for your prayers.

I'm christian and just had surgery a week ago. I have been thinking and praying for years about this. I most definitely know that the time was a God thing. It was his time and his hands. I have trusted in him to get me to this point and will continue to trust in Him all of my days.

I am a Christian, and I have done it without the surgery before. I did not lose the weight with faith, though. I lost it with diet and exercise. Unfortunately I have Rheumatoid Arthritis and just could not do it that way again.

I have had complications due to the surgery, so I was questioning my decision. I even felt guilty, like the Lord made me in His own image and I went and wrecked that.

I really had to just get past that way of thinking. It was not doing anything for me.

Have you talked to your pastor?

I am a Christian but had gotten out of the practice of attending church (move around a lot and I'm very shy). Since having the surgery, I've been going to a church for several months and getting involved. It is like I have so much more time when I'm not constantly eating or trying not to eat!

I am christian and prayed alot about my surgery. In fact i asked Gods hand to be in it the whole way. I believe He is the reason i was allowed to have this surgery and ive had peace about it through the whole process. I feel blessed He has given me the chance to become healthy and yes i have had to lean on Him throughout the struggles through a stricture and 7 weeks of liquids. I do not know how i would have done had i not had His strength.

I am a christian and I had the surgery May 1 of this year. In the beginning I was completely against it because I felt like I should be happy with how God made me. After talking with family, friends, and a whole lot of praying and one on one time with God I knew it was the right decision for me. I'm so glad that I stood on my Faith in God. I am truly a healthier and happy me for that.

You will be fine. Just keep God first and know that everything will work according to his favor.

I'm a Christian, personally I think the way it may interfere with being Christian, is that some other Christians believe " well if you believe in God and your a Christian then you should have faith and believe that God will help you lose the weight without having to do surgery it, or your not trusting God". I've heard that plenty of times, like I'm not believing in God enough to help me if I chose to have weight loss surgery. I don't agree with that but it seems that a lot of other Christian's think about it that way, which sometimes makes me question if I'm not having enough faith in God, if I decide to have surgery.

Shortcake31 and Tshine01,

Thank you for your insight. I have definitely been praying about it and have asked God to make it really hard for me to have it done if it's outside of His will. I really want it to be His will and not my own. Of course, I really want it done too! LOL I was surprised that when I presented it to my husband he did not object. He is a pretty straight forward kind of guy and I thought he would have said that it was not something I should do because I should trust God. THAT was my first "sign" that surgery might be ok. Tshine01: I would keep praying about it like Shortcake did and ask God to show you what to do. God Bless

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
