I had surgery July 23. Best thing I have ever done for myself.

High weight 277

Surgery weight 246

Current 209

It seems so slow to me but am very proud of what I am doing. I walk at least 6 days a week 3 to 5 miles a day. I don't have to much problems with skin, my arms are kinda yuk but I plan on working on this in the winter. I can't wait to be in 100's!

My RNY was on July 17th, had the three month checkup with dr and NUT yesterday and I'm flying high on Cloud 9. 46 lbs lost since surgery, 60 lbs overall. I haven't had dumping syndrome but follow NUT guidelines and haven't "cheated" and tried any sugary foods. I go to our local support group and get frustrated to see sleeves who are smoking again and bypassers who cheat all the time. I do not mind sticking to the rules and I do not mind taking lots of Vitamins every day. I plan on this being a complete and total lifestyle change, not a temporary way to lose lots of weight. I'm 50, wish I had done this at 40, but this is my new life and I'm loving it!!!!

I had my 4 month check up last week with my surgeon and I am having a hard time. I am down 33 lbs since my surgery date but am having trouble sleeping severely.... only getting between 2.5-3.5 hours per night WITH otc sleep aids. and i am not eating enough, dr says i need to get 300-400 more calories per day. it's so hard. i am exhausted all the time and have not been exercising regularly. even when i exercise i still dont sleep well.

Sorry to hear that. I am due for my 4 month check up here soon as well but have had many other appts in between. I am not sleeping well or eating/drinking enough either but it is because of my stricture. Going in for the 4th time this Friday to have an endoscopy and dilation.

I hope your appointment goes well and hopefully you won't have to keep going back. I have an appointment with my primary on Monday to talk about my sleeping issues and maybe get a referral for a sleep study. All my labs came back great so I'm not sure what the deal is.

I had a sleep study and was found to have obstructive sleep apnea but that has gone away. I have always had this problem and it is no fun for sure! I hope they get something figured out for you!

I had RNY on 7/15/14. So far so good! I try to focus on my Water, Vitamins, and Protein in that order. It's hard to get everything in!

Recently, I joined a gym and started working out like crazy. I'm finding I need to increase my food and Protein intake, but it is really hard!

Best of luck to the next 4 months everyone!

July 30th surgery. I have never got sick since my surgery. It was a very easy recovery after the first week. I've lost 80lbs so far. I so happy I had this surgery. I was going to get the sleeve but doc said it was not good for me because of acid reflex so I got the the gastric bypass.

First Christmas, since surgery on July 29th. I was not even hungry. I've never felt so free from overwhelming urge to devour sweets. I'm excited.

Updates? How's everyone doing? Getting through the holidays? Still losing? Any struggles?

I'm doing good. Finally said yes to an invitation to go out and felt comfortable in my skin again. It was nice. I'm still working on getting all my meals and Protein in, but I think I knew that would be my biggest challenge. At this point, I'm definitely happy that I went through with the surgery. (Even considering the financial burden it ended up causing me. Long story) I'm hoping that everyone else has had a positive experience as well. Best gift you can give yourself and your loved ones.

Starting weight: 229

Day of surgery: 217

Today: 152.4

I'm doing really good as well. Since 7/30 I've lost 88lbs and 87 before my surgery. The best thing that I've had happen is that the freedom I experience everyday is amazing.

I am very thankful because on July 8, 2014 i had RNY. I have not had any problems with vomiting or nausea or any of the other problems people have had. It will soon be six months and as of today I have lost 101 Pounds! So thankful for my family and friends support, my surgeon and his clinical nurse specialist. And thankful for all of you here at bariatric pal for your support!

I'm doing really good to! I started at 313 and my surgery weight was 286. Currently I am at 197 and can't believe I actually lost weight over the holidays! I haven't had any challenges, just little bumps in the road or lessons learned you could say but overall extremely happy that I did this.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
