COFFEE COFFEE COFFEE!

Recommended Posts

I Am really stressing out about the whole coffee thing during my preop diet. I have to be up at 3am to be at work at 5 am i have had a coffee everyday for who knows how long and i just cant imagine giving it up like that. I understand after surgery i wont be able to have it until 3 months. But i was wondering if i would be ok to have a sugarfree vanilla iced coffee only 90 calories with 9g of carbs, during my pre op diet!? Please has someone else felt this way......

I've worked nights for years now and get Migraines without daily coffee. I like the taste, and I need it, unfortunately. However, I have "quit" more than once. My advice would be to start tapering down now. Assuming you brew at home, get some Decaf (get the good stuff) - a week with 75% regular, 25% decaf, then another week 50/50, then 25/75, then all decaf. Have done that before and had no problems with headaches or drowsiness.

coffee can also be hard on the stomach, so you might want to try switching to iced tea after surgery. still has caffiene, still tasty, and less harsh on the stomach (at least from my experience). Haven't tried mixing iced tea with Protein powder, but it's on my to-do list.

I decaffeinated myself before surgery. I did a gradual taper like efierke suggested. I didn't want to be going through caffeine withdrawal while recovering from surgery. I stuck with Decaf herbal tea for two months postop. Sleepytime tea at bedtime has become a new habit. When I first tried coffee, it was too irritating to my stomach. Even decaf is very acidic. I was finally able to drink it again around 4 months out. Now I have a big travel mug of decaf coffee everyday. I even use Premier Protein vanilla or chocolate for Creamer. Never bothered to switch back to caffeine, although I'll have regular if that's the only decent kind available when I'm on the road.

Well, I think that if you want to vary from your prescribed pre-op diet, you need to get permission from your surgeon's team, not from random strangers on the internet. Explain your situation, and maybe they can help you come up with alternatives. For example, you can make your own vanilla iced coffee at home for about 15 calories and 1 carb. Or if they really won't budge, perhaps they can do a better job of explaining to you why it's important to avoid coffee/caffeine pre-op so that you will be more motivated to follow their rules.

Speaking of which, and I mean this in a good, friendly, loving way - time to get over the "I can't, I won't, I don't want to" stumbling block that is running in your head regarding food. Yes you can do it, and you need to get in a space where you are committed to following your surgeon's plan, not just the parts of it you like and find convenient. Picking and choosing what we want to do with respect to our diet is what led us all to need weight loss surgery. Plus, your surgeon and his or her team are the experts and understand what their patients need - not you, and again, not random internet strangers.

Good luck!

I was told to stop drinking pop and coffee prior to surgery. I couldn't imagine not having my morning coffee. I started with smaller amounts of coffee. I haven't had a cup of coffee since the end of June . You can do it!!

I switched to Decaf quite some time before the pre-op diet, but my nutritionist and surgeon weren't overly-concerned about caffeine pre-op. They were more concerned about fat and sugar.

As other of said, try tapering off to like half-caf and then 1/4-caf.

My nutritionist had no issues with caffeine intake pre-op or post-op.

I'm a rare bird though in that caffeine has no effect on me at all. I can literally quit anytime with no withdrawal symptoms. Drinking it does not give me the clarity or stimulating boost most people get. I can literally drink it before bed and fall asleep just fine. I drink it because I enjoy the ritual of it more than anything. I make an iced coffee at home with sugar free vanilla Syrup, and a dash of half and half, which is only 40 calories. I also put a scoop of unflavored Protein in it to get in some extra Protein in.

My surgeon & dietician preach No caffeine. And it stinks. I love iced tea. I am 18 days pre-op. I don't know how long after surgery that I will be able to have it. BAAAAH!

My surgeon's assistant was telling me yesterday that there's a coffee flavored Protein powder and she said it tastes really, really good. The brand is Isofusion. I know it's not coffee but it might help to get the flavor of it while drinking a Protein shake.

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
