Band to sleeve, same op, August 12th !

Recommended Posts

As it turns out my pain was caused from an infection in my drain. I was admitted back into the hospital, the operated again and I stayed for four days, I am home now and have mild pain I one incision. As far as hunger...there is none! I am down 14 lbs from original surgery weight, which may not seem like a lot, but I started as a lightweight. So I am almost halfway to goal!

Here's a question for those of you that was sleeved. I know that many of you took 2 or more weeks off from work. But how long were you in pain? I also understand that everyone's situation is different, but just wanted to know. Cause I am have been at my job nearly 6 months, and I don't have a lot of leave. I don't qualify for fmla. So I am just taking a leap of faith that all will be well, and I won't need a lot of time off.

I had surgery on a Tuesday and tried to go back to work the following Monday. I worked half days on Mon and Tues and came home and took the rest of the week off because I was in too much pain. For me, the pain was caused by my bra putting constant pressure on my hiatial hernia repair site. If I didn't have the repair, I think I would have been fine. Or, if I could have gotten away with not wearing a bra, that would have been wonderful. Neither one of those were an option so I stayed home for the rest of the week, braless, and was able to go back the next week - so I took 2 weeks off.

If you have to go back, I would suggest getting a tight tank top that you could wear under your clothes instead of a bra. Or, if you are brave or don't have very large breasts, let them hang free! :)

Oh I can hear it now, if I went to work free. My husband is not hearing that one. So do sports bras hurt too? I will have to look for some tight tanks thay won't ride up. Cause that will be the other problem. I am praying that I won't have any problems, cause I need to keep my job. My husband has been super supportive, and he could care less if I work. I know that is not realistic for our lives right now. So I am grateful for his heart, but I just pray that all will be well.

I took off 5 days but did have the pressure/ pain from the bar sitting on one if my incisions between the breast. I just moved it out to the last row of loops so it wasn't as tight and that helped. Not sure about a sports bar but I would think it would cause the same pressure maybe look going up a size: example instead if 38 go for a 40 to give a little more room. Yeah it won't be a tight fit but for a few days until your incisions fully heal you dont want it tight around that area.

I took two weeks off work, but I felt well enough 2 days after surgery. I was fortunate, no gas no pain, nothing really, the nurses kept asking me to rate my pain, it was always 0 out of 10. I guess I was one of the lucky ones :-)

My doc said my band was really difficult to get out as well. He was going to call the op off, the bottom part of my stomach had migrated up through the band and created a large distended pouch above the band. Funny I had no symptoms of anything being really wrong with it all those years ! Anyway he said it was like a dogs Breakfast in there and referred to it as a ticking time bomb ! He said he had real trouble getting the bougie in, the op took twice as long but he managed it all in the one op. So happy with my surgeon, I'm 3 and a bit weeks out and still feeling great, hit a stall but not bothered about that anymore, I'm just sticking to the rules and exercising twice and day, no pain, no gas, lots of clothes that are already too big !!

wow, i hope my doc will go through with it while i'm in there. I don't have a clue what it's going to look like. i've had no symptoms at all and he fully unfilled me as soon as they found it in February and i've been eating very carefully since then to try and not stretch it out more. I can't wait to get this all out. it's so hard to work out and do abs and stuff with this stupid port.

I planned on only taking 3 days off following, with one full week of working from home( which I am fortunate is an option for me). Due to complications, I ended up taking a total of 7 days off with equal amount of working from home. My surgery was on 8/12 and I just went back to the office yesterday 9/4 and ended up staying a half day.

With regard to bra, I too had hernia repair, but need to wear a bra...I also bought a reasonably priced "Spanx"-like tank top that hel everything tight and provided me comfort.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
