I saw my PCP yesterday & started my pre op diet. She wants me to follow a strict Paelo diet. She said no calorie counting. Just eat Protein, eggs, veggies & fruits. So I won't be using myfitnesspal since no calorie counting. Also checked with nurse at my insurance, they don't require a food log either. I still would to receive/provide support during 6 month diet phase.

I do not have a surgery date yet but have been told it would take 3 - 6 months before surgery will be scheduled. I have been scheduled for all my required specialist appointments which should all be completed by Sept 5th. I have attended the required seminar and have had my initial appointment.

I go to my first seminar(required before my appointment to see the surgeon) on July 15. So I have 6mo+ to go.

Hi Michelle -

I am just starting on this journey as well. I go to my first seminar tomorrow afternoon (7/21). I am so very excited. I'm not sure what my pre-surgery requirements will be because I am self-pay for the sleeve. I have Tricare and they still consider the sleeve as experimental. I will post again after tomorrow's seminar and let you know. Please friend me and we will keep in contact. What happened at the seminar you went to?

We filled out paper work & the surgeon made a presentation about the sleeve & bypass. Then opened floor for questions.

Kheartskat, I hope so! i worded that wrong!- its just my 3 month supervised diet which my NUT has me doing high Protein and low cal . I think she wants me to lose 5% of my body weight..and then i will do the 2 week pre-op liquid diet after ins approval... I guess I just feel like it has already been forever... I thought about doing this surgery several times over the past 10 yrs and I am just now figuring it out! I was so overwhelmed everytime I looked into this surgery that I would change my mind and try another 'fad' diet. This time has been different though, its been so easy... I feel like this is the right time for me to do this! I'm glad to see other people just starting this journey, I definitely NEED some buddies to get through this diet and surgery, I know I've already got my fiance who is behind me 100% but I have already had some unsupportable and judgey friends/ family :(

Don't worry about those that judge you. If they are truly your friend they will support you. Good luck & congratulations on choosing this new life. :-)

I just had my initial appointment on July 18th. So l'm looking at mid October to early November if everything goes well. I'm going to my first support group tonight at 6pm and I see the nutritionist on July 29th. I know this is the right decision for me. I just dislike the whole idea of having surgery and going through the recovery period. I will be happy to gain control of my eating habits with the tools that this surgery will give me. I am glad to have found this forum to share with others that are making the same changes as me.

I went to my bariatric seminar on tues. It was very informative. The surgeon requires I keep a food & exercise journal. Man & I thought I was getting out of doing it. So I'm back to using myfitnesspal. My PCP, insurance & surgeon all have different requirements. Im glad I know what everyone requires so I can get this ball rolling!

Good Morning: I have finally "decided" to do the surgery. I went through the entire process got approved and had a surgery date. My husband REALLY didn't want me to do it. so after all that drama, I backed out. I am now ready again and heavier than I was previously. We are going to apply for our passports next thursday. I have already contacted 'A LIGHTER ME' and that is where I have decided to do. I do not want to go through this entire process again. My insurance will cost $3000 so why not bypass all the drama and pay $4600 and be done with it! I am still at the beginning stage. I have to wait until my son is out of school on break. I am hoping to leave on Sept 26. I have been reading a lot and asking a lot of questions. my husband wants me to talk to my doctor first, so I have that appt scheduled. I love this site. People are extremely supportive and informative. Best of luck to you! I wish you well!

Hi, my name is Dana I started my journey July 3rd, 2014. I am from Fresno, CA. I am going through a place called California Variations for my gastric sleeve surgery. My main requirements were to attend a seminar, meet the dietitian and do a psych evaluation. I have already completed the seminar and my psych evaluation and will be meeting with the dietitian August 13th, hopefully by then I can get approval from the insurance company and get a surgery date. I'm thinking sometime in September (fingers crossed)..if there's anyone who has questions or in need of a buddy I would love to help

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
