Can someone please offer me some advice

Recommended Posts

I had my procedure for the sleeve done on 12/31/14 weighed in at 301. Here it is 6 months has past and I only lost 40 pounds. The month of May I know I slipped (and it was my fault not paying attention of what was going in my mouth) due to the overwhelming stress at work. I come on here frequently to get tips and advice from others, and what I see is people who had the surgery in Dec like me lost 70-90 pounds. I know our bodies function differently, but its really depressing. I've been strict with myself the past two weeks writing everything down, I've done away with tea, and been drinking at least 60+ of Water a day. So I weighed myself this morning and lost only 2 pounds (261). What really hurts me, I'm still wearing the same size 22 pants, I do say that my 2XL are a little bigger on me. I've been excercising 4 days a week., its either at the gym or walking my subdivision. Do you think I'm personally doing something wrong?

From personal experience, I know that I hold onto weight when I eat high glycemic foods - breads, Pasta, rice - even apples, grapes and pineapple will do it to me. As long as I stick to a diet of about 75% Protein and 25% low glycemic foods (lentils, Beans, salads, eggplant, squash) I can lose weight.

Omit sugar, Pasta, rice, bread. crackers (etc) potatoes and fruit.< /p>

Have lean Protein (chicken fish prawn) and veggies or salad.< /p>

Don't omit tea, it's hydrating.

Thanks for your advice, I have cut out the breads and pastas this week and I've been faithfully tracking everything I had eaten.

I'll keep doing what I can and see what happens.

Even still at the 6 month point, we need to make the most important things getting in the Protein (60-90gm or whatever your surgeon recommends), and at least 64 oz of water/liquid every day. This makes a big difference in our weight loss. And I agree with other posters--starchy carbs this soon after surgery can really mess with our weight loss. The more fresh (or frozen) veggies and (limited) fruits you can get in, the happier your body will be to let go of those pounds.

Sorry you're dealing with stressful stuff at work. It's one of the biggest life stressors that drives us to making unhealthy eating choices. The stress isn't likely to go away, but WE can learn ways to COPE with the stress so we don't end up sabotaging ourselves by choosing our old reliable, comforting food, like we always have before our surgery. It takes work, but there are a lot of self-help resources out there to begin taking charge. We owe it to ourselves.

Celebrate the 40 pounds that you HAVE lost, and if there are some things that you need to do to get back to your original Bariatric Eating plan, it sounds like you are ready and committed to moving forward. That's the key--move forward from here--don't look back!

Thanks LIvingfree! As I've really thought alot this past weekend, I think that is where I failed, carbs. My surgeon told me like you said focus on Protein and Water. He most probably told me about carbs, but I didn't (or maybe didn't want to) hear about carbs. I have cut back on carbs big time this past week.

Are you drinking with your meals? My doctor says that when people are having trouble losing weight, they are usually drinking with their meals. My doc says that I need to eat food without a drink, and then wait at least 30 minutes after finishing my meal to drink.

A 40 pound weight loss is Awesome! Don't give up!

I'm a year out this past June, and I too find my self having trouble loosing weight. I've read a lot of the comments left for you and realized that I'm eating too much fruits. And sugary things. I workout out a lot, I've lost tons of inches but only lost 52 lbs in a year. I only want to lose another 20-25 but OMG This are the hardest I haven't lost any weight since December. I'm gonna try to follow what everyone is saying, cutting all carbs and eating less fruits. Fingers crossed. GOOD LUCK. Don't get discourage any weight lost is a success

It is so easy to fall back to our old wicked ways. My weight has been pretty stable over the past 6 months but this is probably due to the fact that I am pretty faithful with vigorous exercise. The first year or so I was so good about eliminating bad carbs (breads, potatoes, sweets) but after feeling pretty good about my weight loss and liking the way I looked you become complacent and start back with old habits, a cookie or 2 or 3, an ice cream, snaking on chips. These things really sabotage us.

So basically its all back to basics of filling up on Protein and keeping the bad carbs very low.

A couple of thoughts - How many calories are you eating? I know that I have to count calories, and I have to eat around 900 consistently to lose weight. I stayed around 800-1000 for the first year. I almost never had bread, rice, or Pasta (and still don't). I never drink with meals. I do my best not to graze - but if I do - I count the calories. I also have to be honest with myself. I have to count everything. Even when I don't do well, I log it into myfitness pal. It helps me to see how much damage I can do in a short time.

As for your clothes not being much looser, I had lose nearly 60 pounds before it became apparent. After that, every 10-20 pounds really showed. Now, 10 pounds is a clothing size.

As for the stress, I totally get that. I have a super stressful job, and I know that I'm a stress eater. Of all the things I've had to overcome, this has been the hardest. I don't always succeed, but I'm much better than I was before surgery. I'm really mindful about it, and if I find myself looking for something to eat when I am not hungry (even though sometimes I think I am) I distract myself with another activity.

Losing and maintaining weight is work every day, all day, but you can do it!

Carbs are a gateway drug for me. I try to stay away from bread, Pasta, sugars, etc.

Logging your intake is a great start - get back to basics. When I find myself slipping, I incorporate a Protein shake mid-afternoon - this curbs my want/need for quick energy from sugars.

Make good solid choices on your foods - low glycemic veggies are a good choice. Go back to measuring your food. No snacking - get all the snack foods out of the house. Personally, if I have tortilla chips in the house, I'm going to eat them...and a lot of them.

Most importantly, be kind to yourself. That doesn't mean give yourself a pass...just don't beat yourself up. Come here and check in - accountability is important.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
