Is it easy to pull the stitches out of port

Recommended Posts

My question is how does the port come undone?

I was banded yesterday. and last night when I turned over I felt like a stretch or somthing. I seen one guy on the net that he was taking a shower. And he bent over to pick somthing up. And his port came undone.

my question, is it realy that easy to fall off.? And if it does fall off does that mean another surgery?

I just may be overreacting.

Best bet is to put a call into your doctor. I doubt that it would be that easy to pull away from the stitches, but I'm not a doctor. Hope everything is ok.

I sadly tore my stiches on the left side of my port just recently from a slip in the shower. I was unaware of it until I lifted my arms and felt the searing pain that made me scream out.

I went to the doctors where the confirmed it.

Needless to say, they told me to go home and baby myself. It can now take up to 6 weeks for healing.

I'm sorry to hear that. That is scary to slip. So do they have to do surgery again to fix?

No... they said the scar tissue will adhear to the port and secure it. ONLY IF I TAKE GREAT CARE! so the Dr. says! lol.

Yes, it was scary when he told me that. And yes, the first thing out of my mouth was, Do I have to go under again for you to fix it? She said no. Thank God!

So needless to say, I have to make sure I dont break the rules of , Bending, formal exercise <other than walking>, picking up anything over 10lbs, and also to try and stabalize my stomach when I cough, sneeze, ect. So far so good. I had to really good days this week, but today I am feeling pain again. I went to the garden shop with my husband today, and walked for hours picking out plants for my back yard, I didnt pick anything up, but the walking wore me out. Time for a lite nap :-)

Where is your port located?

Did the surgeon have to do any repair, or are do you just have to let yourself heal?

What do you mean by "undone"? Do you mean it "flipping" or pulling away from the abdominal wall? Or are you talking about something closer to assembly failure, where the port becomes detached from the tubing, for example?

felt like a stretch or somthing.
You're recently banded, you should expect to have your port area be sore for a while. It was about 3 - 4 weeks before the "twinges" and "pulls" stopped for me. 4 days post-op, I personally wouldn't be alarmed if the site of an incision felt like it stretched. It *is* stretching... the skin is stretching and hitting on the staples/glue/stitches/whatever, your muscles are doing the same.

But of course, general advisory, if you're concerned -- do call your surgeon.

No I just never have had surgery before and I guess I'm just a little hyprocondriac. Thanks for your post

I have been banded only 3 months and I found out on 4/24 that my port is flipped. It is pointing toward my left hip, so they are unable to fill it.

Yes, I need to have surgery again to repair it.

No, I don't recall feeling any pain when it detached.

I went for fill yesterday and doc said mine was flipped. He manipulated it with his hands and got it so he could access it. I thought they stayed stiched, he said no. He said the stiches disolve. He told me the port is free standing, although they usually stay put.

like Shesha said, I was also

banded 10-03-06 and after 3 weeks i had a bad pain in he port area. the 1st fill was very hard but, the Dr. worked hard and I got filled. Went for the 2nd fill and Dr. relized that the port had fliped. Went back to surgery on Feb. 15,2007 for port revision. Yes, the port can become detached very easy because it is stitched to a muscle and its weak and not so strong.

just wondering, for those of you who had your port flipped, and then repaired... did insurance cover that?

Hi there, I too had a flipped port, and it was not painful, my doctor was able to hold it down to do my fills but suggested I have surgery to fix the problem. Since I didn't have the money to do it I was able to put it off for awhile.. Well, when I had my Tummy Tuck, my surgeon stitched my port into place and said that sucker won't ever flip or move again and he was right, haven't had any problems to date..

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play, and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
