Any May 20th surgeries out there?

Recommended Posts

Definitely not easy! I've been doing well. Just took off my compression socks for an hour or so to rest my legs. The hernia removal chest pain was the worst for me. I don't have any other real pain. My abdomen is just SORE like I've done 10,000 push ups. I walked out side 3/5 mile. The walking helps.

My surgery was at 9:30 am on May 20th. I just got home from the hospital. I had terrible nausea all day Tuesday and most of Wednesday. Including a lot of dry heaving, which kills. I've been dealing a bit with gas pains but the majoriy of my pain is in my upper chest from the hernia repair. My incision sites are sore, but completely manageable. I am really struggling to get in my fluids. I am allowed only plain Water, broth, and sugar free Jello. I will be able to add milk and pure Protein on the 27th. Right now I can't imagine getting either of those down. I am happy to be on the other side of this thing and am praying to heal quickly. :)

Are you taking narcotics? Those would be making me nauseous

Are you taking narcotics? Those would be making me nauseous

I only took two doses of narcotics on Tuesday and have only had some tylenol since then. I knew the hydrocodone would make me more nauseous so I avoid it whenever possible. I am just trying to power through with my anti-nausea and indigestion meds. I have felt better each day. I knew nausea would be a big issue for me. Hopefully that part is now over.

Did everyone get a leak check? I was discharged yesterday afternoon but they didn't make me do a leak check. The nurse just said that if I DID have a leak, I would be having many more complications. So they just discharged me....something about that just doesnt sound right o me?

I was sleeved on 4/30 and I didn't get a leak check either. So far so good. If I had known about it, I would have wanted one also. I haven't had any complications so far.

I think I would have been too scared to leave the hospital if I hadn't had the swallow (leak check). My nausea seems to have finally gone. My surgeon wanted me to stay another night because I still have quite a lot of pain but I preferred to go home and it sure is Great to be home.

Honestly it does get better every day. Today is day 4 and I feel 80 percent better I am passing gas I can sleep on my stomach and side as long as I have mt heating pad on and the gas is really coming out. I can't believe 3-4 ounces of Water is filling me up but it is I am crushing everything pain meds and all Calcium and Vitamins are chewable I am spacing everything out, so far I have gotten in 6 ounces of Protein but my doctor says take it slow and easy as long as everything is going in and staying in with water I'm ok. Saturday I can have cream of chicken Soup without the chicken I'm looking forward to that because I hate broth now. Congrats to all of my May surgerys you can do this everyone else take one day at a time you got this . Please remember to sip gas x strip and heating pad they are a life saver.

Has anyone gotten any approval to wear something supportive around their tummy? Like even a Spanx tank top or something to wrap the stomach? Just for a little extra support?

First dr visit today. They checked my drain and removed bandages. I got clearance to take a shower today...wooohoooo!. Belly button incision stings like "aaarrrrgggghhhh". Drain wont come out until may 30 (damn drain). But so far so good. Looking forward to next week for full liquids! Walked 1/2 mile this morning.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
