I guess each surgeon has his or her own protocol. I had to lose eight pounds in two weeks, consuming only four Protein Shakes a day (600 calories a day), or I would not qualify for my scheduled surgery. You can bet your ___ ___ ___ I followed that diet and I exercised as much as I could bc I didn't want to blow this chance. I lost eleven pounds. I did all of this last May, when my third child was graduating from high school. I drank my Protein Shake while I took my entire family to his favorite restaurant, I drank a shake at two different graduation parties, and I drank a shake even as we threw a crawfish boil in his honor. It may have been the hardest two weeks I ever spent without food.... But I kept repeating my mantra (that I live by during difficult situations).... YOU CAN DO ANYTHING FOR TWO WEEKS.... YOU CAN DO ANYTHING FOR TWO WEEKS.... You've come a long way..... Don't blow it now. You deserve to get yourself healthy. You are worth more than that food. You can do this!!!!!!

Some doctors have punched holes in patients bodies and find out the liver is too swollen to operate. They just close you back up and reschedule or not.

Time to fess up to your doctor. Don't go to the pain and expense of a false surgical alarm. It's definitely not too late and you're definitely not the first person to cheat on their pre-op diet.

My surgery is on the 21st. My pre-op is a shake for Breakfast, another for lunch and a low cal meal (lean Protein and half a cup of veggies. The most I've cheated so far was having a handful of almonds. But I figured they were additional protein anyway. Oh, and a handful of popcorn. :/ but I've told myself I'm back on track today.

If you haven't sick with it at all, you probably need to call your doc. Your sabotaging yourself. Been there and done that many times. :(

My surgeon would not have performed the surgery, but I don't know what yours will decide.

You might reconsider having this surgery for now. Wait until you are sure you want it so bad that you will follow the doctors orders both pre-op and post-op no matter what.

The surgery is really not a miracle on it's own.

It may be the hardest thing some people have ever done in their lives. But when you realize you are worth every sacrifice, every moment of discomfort, every bit of emotional pain and all the necessary changes that have to be made to be successful---you'll do it.

This surgery is not something to mess with. Be very serious, very sincere, very honest with yourself --or don't do it. Bow out now.

Get clear and make your decision.

Here's a warm hug for you :) I know the feeling of being caught between a rock and a hard place; we all do. You're not the lone ranger out there struggling in this way.

Love yourself.

I feel like I am sabotaging myself.....I am not sticking to my pre op diet at all.....please help

my dr told me that if my liver was not nice and small that he would not do the surgery....that scared the crap out of me.....picture me waking up and him telling me that, and then telling my hub and then having to reschedule it all? all because i could not follow a diet for me to have WLS.....

i am doing some tough love

you can do this pre op diet if you truly wanted to

you are not even giving yourself a chance.....its not going

to get easier....you must adhere to understanding that from now on

and especially right after surgery, if you eat more than you are suppose to you could harm yourself.....your life is worth more than a quick minute or two food gasm GF......look what its doing to you now....

as TMF said, call and and let your doctor know (accept responsibility) and then follow the rules until surgery and after.....for best results with any WLS, its is BEST to follow your doctors instructions.....best of luck.

This night be one of those it depends on your doctor.

Like others, I had to lose a few lbs and my pre-op diet helped me get there. It does shrink / make your liver more flexible. It helps you get in the right mindset for post op.

What does your pre-op diet consist of? Were you told that you had to lose some weight before surgery? What will your post op diet be? You're only hurting yourself by sabotaging this. I did cheat here and there. It is though and I wasn't perfect but I knew I really wanted the surgery.

Call your surgeon and see what he/she says. Just be careful because you're not setting yourself up for easy success post-op. Take care and let us know what happens.

I'd call the doctors office and speak to someone. It's possible that you aren't ready for surgery.

The band isn't a miracle, it's taken me lots of planning and work. The band will meet you halfway, but you must do your part.

Rather than waste time and money, fess up, and work on the mental aspects of the surgery and what it would mean to you to lose weight.

Please be kind to you!

I wish you the best. My pre-op was months of habit changing (no specific weight loss required although I did lose 12 pounds), then five days pre-op Clear liquids only. Clear is hard, but I was secretly glad it was that restrictive because I was afraid of having to eat one tiny meal and then shakes while being hungry with no band yet. I am on day 4 and tired and draggy, but the hunger is getting easier. My personal goal is to have the smallest liver my surgeon has ever seen on a person my size! I remember when the interviewing psychologist told me on a followup last year that I might not be ready for WLS because I told him I was still eating in front of the TV. The thought of not being cleared by him infuriated me. But then I decided to follow the rules and change that habit. I had to go back to him in another month and by then I had stopped TV eating, lost a couple of pounds, and joined an Aqua Zumba class. I hated his guts for delaying my process by a month, but his words made me commit to this. The pre-op diet is for your safety. Ask your doc about it. Good luck!

Sorry to hear that you are struggling….but in the end you are sabotaging yourself and maybe its a good time to look at the reason why? I am not trying to be mean in any way….I understand….I had a 2 week all liquid pre-op followed by a 2 week all liquid post op followed by 2 weeks of mushies before finally going back to solids. (Plus I had a 3 and 7 year old and a hubby to cook for each day). If you asked me 7 months ago if I could survive 6 weeks without actually chewing one piece of food I would have laughed in your face and said no way….but i did it…and I did it without cheating….and believe me that does not make me any better or worse than anyone else on here struggling with their weight.

For me….there was no cheating because I REALLY had a good look at myself and my life and why I chose to go this route in the first place. This was the hardest decision I've ever had to make and it turned out to be one of the best. But it hasn't been easy…there has been self-doubt and endless worry and days (when i returned to solids) that are better than others. There is a big learning curve with the band and the long and winding journey I am on is bumpy at times…but, in my opinion, so worth it….at least to me.

I've learned to take things one day at a time and one meal at a time and I have learned that I am NOT perfect and have learned to cut myself some slack.

So, I say don't beat yourself up….but look at why you are sabotaging yourself…the fact that you are able to acknowledge it for yourself is a good start….

And most importantly, have a candid conversation with your doctor about what you have done on the pre-op diet….not being honest and up front with your doctor will NOT benefit you!

Wishing you the best….let us know how it all goes!

Regardless of whether your surgeon does the surgery or not if you can't follow the pre-op diet you may not be ready for the post op diet.

Even after WLS there is a level of discipline required for it to be successful. Perhaps you aren't ready for this commitment yet. It doesn't mean you won't be someday but perhaps that day hasn't come yet.

I hope you can find the motivation to stic with your pre-op diet because you'll need that strength later when going through bandster hell.

Two things could happen. your surgeon does not cancel the surgery or he will!

The important question here is why are you not sticking to the pre-op diet. You have to get your head in the game or you are heading for trouble and struggles that are sure to come that makes pre-op a picnic.

The reason for the pre-op is to shrink your liver. It also helps detox you from the bad carbs and junk we ate before. It makes it easier on our systems not to have to fight so hard afterwards with cravings....

It is really a mind set...Are you ready for the changes that are about to happen? Only you can answer that question...

I think you are scared that you will never eat real food again. But that is not true. You will be able to in the future eat anything you want just in moderation and in balance. :)

You are getting some great advice from the people who posted responses before me. We all want you to be successful. And honestly, if you don't somehow change your lifestyle, you won't have the big success you want with the band. You may lose weight, but if you're still eating high calorie, fatty foods, or too much food, at some point you will stall out and become dissatisfied. I suggest you keep track of what you eat in MyFitnessPal. And be brutally honest when you put your entries in. It will open your eyes to what you're really putting in your body. It sure opened mine.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
