Hello. My name is Mandie. I'm 28 years old and I have alway been over weight. I had tried so many different weight loss methods from extreme dieting to medication. Well after 10 of no luck I decided to look into WLS. I started my journey in August of 2013, and just came home from having my surgery on 3/4/2014. So I am 2 days post op and idk how to really explain it and could def use some advise...

Here's my dilemma. I'm on the phase 2 clear liquid diet. I am drinking what I need to to stay hydrated and I'm taking my Vitamins and other medications that my dr put me on. I just don't see. To get the "full" feeling. Is this because I'm only on Clear Liquids or am I doing something wrong. I really need other people that have gone thru this surgery to talk to...

Hi Mandie, Before surgery when we ate meals we normally ate till we were "full". That's what got us into this life style of being overweight. A lot of what this surgery is about is getting past that concept of "full". The sleeve allows you to eat just so much, maybe 3 to 4 ounces at a time. Our minds and our tastebuds may still be hungry but our tummy will say "no more". We no longer eat till we are full, we eat till we are "satisfied". We learn to eat enough to give us the nourishment we need and no more. Once you move to the next phase of pureed foods you will be more satisfied and then even more so when you can move on to more solid food. The first two or three weeks of liquids is to give your new tummy a rest and to let it heal so getting full is not on your "to do list", in fact, eating till you are full could make you very sick. Take it slow and use this time to learn to eat slowly and in small deliberate bites. This journey is a learning process and takes a while to get it right. Good luck to you.

Thank you, see I did a lot of research before deciding on the surgery and I guess that I never really got the concept of it til now. I really appreciate it. I'm so excited to have this tool to begin a new life for me and my family. One other question I'd there anything I can do about the lack of flavor? I guess that's one thing I really miss about my before surgery diet...flavor. I mean I get it with my broths but for some reason that's only partially satisfying with the absence of flavors...

Today I started to supplement my clear liquid diet with Protein Shakes. It's kind of discouraging because the dr told me to mix 3oz of slim milk with either a full scoop of whey Protein mix or a packet of carnation good start Breakfast no sugar added mix...it's super strong and really thick...this is for the next 11 days 3 times a day

Can you thin it out with Water?

I would but unfortunately it has to be exactly 3oz as that is all my stomach will allow right now.

We'll I'm now 7 days post op and doing better. I found my carnation drink mixes that my dr suggested and they are SO much better then the whey Protein. I went outside to take my first longer walk...I made it around the block twice. I find out Thursday from my primary dr how much I'm down. I'm excited and nervous all at the same time.

Well today is 10 days post op and I went to my GP for a follow up found out I'm down 20 pounds! This gives me such a motivator, now I'm looking into a membership at my local YMCA so that I can start working out more. Still on the liquid diet for another week but I'm doing good on that too. The Popsicles are a great help to the "chewing"

Hi Mandie! I asked this same question about feeling full. I had my surgery on the 3rd and am on purée foods and still don't get that full feeling. I eat what I'm suppose to and stop. I just don't feel full. Do you get a tightness in your chest area in the middle? I do towards the end of my meal and I wonder if that is a sign that I'm full! Since we had our surgeries right around the same time it would be nice to have someone to talk to and compare notes with. Let me know if you are interested.

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
