Survey - Carbonated Drinks? Do u drink them?

Recommended Posts

NO!! Pre surgery: I wasn't a 'big fan' of soda as my body could not tolerate it, and I paid for it with UTI's.

Seriously if I drank 3 sodas a week- you can bet money within the next 2 weeks I will be at the ER with a UTI. So I learned a long time ago to make Water my friend...

But aside of the bloating the carbonation stretches your stomach too! And why go through what you have only to do the same thing to your body all over again....because once it stretches it will take more food to get to that 'full' feeling...AND no straws..

Honestly I am too scared to try it, I'm afraid the stretching will do damage to my suture line in my stomach!!! just not worth the risk.

I have a friend who is 4 yrs. post op gastric bypass she drinks soda- but she dilutes it with water....lessens carbonation.

No, they are nutritionally worthless if not actively damaging to your health . . . plus anything carbonated makes me feel uncomfortable. The only time I have carbonation is once a year -- a small glass of champagne at Christmas.

I drink carbonated mineral Water all the time, and love it. The body is a remarkable thing, the same enzymes that break up your food will break up the carbonated Water, and the fluids in your stomach will dilute it as far as I'm concerned. I don't guzzle it, nor do I drink lots, but I'll sit down at night and have a glass over ice with lemon in it, it's so refreshing and enjoyable. Since my surgery almost six months ago, I haven't been a fan of water, so I do what I have to to get my fluids in. I think I had my first glass maybe a month after surgery. I'll also have a small coke when I go out for pizza, the two just go hand in hand. The cabonation has never bothered me. Everyone is different and everyone's bodies are different, what works for me, might not work for the next person..

Apparently my doctor is not worried about the carbonation stretching my stomach. I am allowed it after 6 months. Same with alcohol.

I drank over 2 litres of Diet Coke per day before I opted to stop drinking in preparation for surgery.

I haven't had a soda in a year now and do not miss it at all. Now the thought of a soda seems like it would be harsh.

I kinda had the thought that is I was going to go through this whole process soda or any carbonation was going to just be a no no for the rest of my life. I can't say that I don't miss the weird tingling feeling it use to give me but I gave it up so long ago that I don't think I will ever go back to it and my doctor to stressed that it would stretch my sleeve and that just sends my mind into a spiral to think I would ever gain weight back. I hear so many different things who can tell I think you have to just be cautious and see how you feel and how your body handles it but I think it is kind of a waste of time in my opinion.

Nope! I have not had any soda since the "last supper", thanksgiving day 2013. I miss it occasionally, but not enough to go there again. I'm doing my best to keep it clean.

I'm only two weeks out so no. I was a big fan of diet coke before my surgery and I have been relieved that of all the things I crave (and there are many) since surgery, Diet Coke isn't one of them.

However, I think there's no need to be too dogmatic about it. The fact that surgeons are divided show that there are no clear answers. Also, not all carbonated drinks are the same - Diet Coke contains all sorts of things that are bad for us, while fizzy Water or tonic Water are just not as bad. Similarly, there's real divided opinion about whether the fizz can stretch your tummy - my dietitian was honest and said that there just isn't a definite answer as to whether it does or not.

I'm going to stay away from Diet Coke for as long as I can, but I will allow myself to have gin and tonic, champagne or maybe even fizzy lemondade from time to time.

My philosophy over the past two weeks - and my way of dealing with the feeling that I'll never be normal again - is that I didn't have this op to become some odd class of eater for whom some things are off limits. I did this so that I can be a normal person who can eat and drink in moderation, and for me that includes the occasional fizzy drink.

Confession time:

I'm almost 7 months post-op. I've had:

* a glass of champagne (about a month ago)

* a small fountain Diet Dr. Pepper at the movies (waited for all the fizz to go away and drank it over a 2-hour period);

* half of a bottled Diet Dr. Pepper about a month ago -- and BOY did those bubbles NOT go away. Won't try that again!

Honestly, being off of diet sodas of all kinds for 8 months (starting 2 months pre-op) pretty much put me off of them. Not going to make them a habit again.

No diet soda. Ever. Don't want it anymore, (which is a MIRACLE considering I had a 4-6 per day habit before). Carbonation tends to make me uncomfortable now so its easy to avoid it. I will occasionally go for a beer, as lightly carbonated as I can get, (typically Guinness), but it fills me up faster than I can finish it before it's hot!

I'm 1 month post op and was *craving* the fizzy feeling of seltzer Water that I drank alllllll the time before my surgery (I haven't been a pop lover for a very long time). So I poured a tiny amount in a little glass filled with ice and let it sit for a min. It got rid of a lot of the bubbles which is good for my tummy but still had enough fizz to satisfy my tongue lol 2 sips was all I needed or wanted! Had lots of burps, but no tummy discomfort :)

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
