Question regarding post op

Recommended Posts

I will not be having my Lap-Band procedure until mid May or of first of June, but can anyone tell me about the diet immediately after post op. I am scheduled to have my concult with the surgeon in March. I am sure that each surgeon has their own specific directions to follow. I am just trying to figure out some things I should expect. Thanks in advance.

Hi There!

Welcome, Wishing you lots of luck, Well as you mentioned each doctors requirements are different from one and another. My surgery is scheduled for this coming monday feb. 10th. so I've been on the pre opt diet for almost 2 weeks now and it aint that hard it gets easier as time goes on I'm allowed to have 2 Protein shakes a day and unlimed veggies with one meal and very lean Protein .... immediately after surgery I will be on only Clear liquids for about a week and then move on for 2 weeks to pureed food and so on.......

Good Luck

Just ask your doc, for the pre op & post op diet or you can go on the computer and print it out , but your doc. might want you to do some things different and what they think might be right for you as we again are all different , so please ask so you know what to expect that's what their there for.

Hi Welcome. Most surgeon's have us doing Clear Liquids for the week immediately following surgery. Then we move on to full liquids. After full for a week or two, we move to mushy. Mushies include stufff like yogurt, baby food, or food that has been pureed in your blender. But, as previously mentioned above, follow your Surgeon's guidelines. These are what OUR surgeon have told us. Best wishes, Karen..aka..kll724

Ditto to all of the above...everyone is different.

Personally, 2 weeks all liquids pre-op (clear liquids a few days before)

2 weeks post-op all liquids then 2 weeks mushies than back to solids.

Check with your doc at the consultation.

Good luck...keep us posted on your journey!!

This really varies. My protocol was one day clear then one week full liquids and on to mushies one week then smooth foods one week then regular foods. I was not really hungry post-op and this was a good time for me to work on behavioral modification, like putting my utensil down between bites, using smaller silverware and little bowls, saucers. Sometimes I'd go to a lot of trouble making something like a yummy blended Soup only to find myself not really hungry for it. That is a beautiful thing. My appetite did return and then I went through the process of getting fils before getting back to that place of not being hungry. There is nuancing in the beginning when patience is required but you will get there! And it's best not to compare protocols too much as your surgeon will have it laid out for you. Some have Protein goals and meal plans, etc. Just keep at whatever is prescribed for you and your diligence will pay off big time. And if you're worried you won't be able to do it, know we all had that fear. You can!

Same as others - clear liquid (broths/juices) for a few days, then liquids (soups/soft foods with no lumps), followed by puréed food. I think it was something like 20 days before I could eat regular food. But as you said, all surgeon requirements are different, though similar.

Welcome you will learn so much from this site. As you said each doctor is different so follow what they want you to do. I was banded January 27 and my post op appointment is Friday. I just want something other than a liquid diet.

Thank you all for taking the time to respond. All of the information was very helpful. I have an appt. with a pulmonologist on Friday for clearance and my 4th weigh-in. I am scheduled to see my surgeon on March 6 and nutritionist on March 20. I still have to schedule an appt with a cardiologist but I have to get the referral for that. I will get in touch with my dr. about that tomorrow. I also have to have my pysch eval but I have to pay all out of pocket for that. I hoping I can do that within a week or 2. We will see.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
