WTH are some people thinking disregarding post-op diet rules?

Recommended Posts

I just watched a video diary of a lady who was documenting her WLS journey. She was laying in her bed 3 days post-op and was talking about how she just finished a soft boiled egg, didn't like the taste, and so would try a fried egg the next day. She also stated that her surgeon's post-op diet was one week Clear liquids, two week's full, etc...but he just doesn't understand how impossible it is to not chew food.

I just can't believe how some people disregard their surgeon's diet plan and make-up their own rules....as if their way is a better way. It reminds me that a big part of obesity is the ability to live in denial about and to make excuses for our bad behaviors.

I hope to God that when I have my surgery I am strong enough to stick to the post-op diet. I think I will be. I am not viewing the food guidelines as "optional" and I recognize that doing things My Way is what got me to point of requiring surgery.

I feel for those whose food addictions have such a hold on their mind, body, and spirits.

They are also not thinking about the fact that their staple line and stomach are healing and even if they think they "feel" fine and that they didn't puke so it was ok for them to eat. The fear of bursting my stomach staples kept me totally on track.

When I had my surgery, there was a gentleman down the hall who had visitors come in and bring peperoni pizza. He thought he could chew a piece of peperoni...he didn't do very well.

The rules are there for a reason, at least follow the first month of post op diet before experimenting...

people have to take personal responsibility for their actions and refusing to follow the rules means they clearly were not ready foe the full commitment required to make this journey...

we all have food demons, but to do this you have to *want* to let them go.

very sad.

I told my surgeon that fear is/was a very good deterrent for me. I didn't deviate from his directions one iota. I was too worried about the ramifications.

I cheated on week 2 after my lapband 4 yrs ago. I ate a Burger King cheesburger. The fear of a staple line leak after my revision 6 mths ago was enuf to keep me on 4 weeks of full liquids and 4 weeks of soft. In fact, the nurse had to talk me into eating Jello the first week cuz I thought it was too solid. Plus my husband is the food Nazi and I know he woulda tattled on me to my dr...

Good luck with ur surgery!

There's a post-op diet plan for a reason! You're healing...HELLO!

You can get away with not doing the pre-op diet without dancing around too much danger, but not the Post-op diet...

The pre-op diet is intended to prepare you for the surgery and the post-op diet. My surgeon said he could tell that I had followed the pre-op diet because my insides were "well prepared". I also think that the pre-op diet has made it easier for me this past week, I haven't been overly hungry and have been satiated with my intake levels.

and yes the fear of bursting my stomach staples really helps me too!

I did something yesterday I thought I would never do! I'm 7 days in on a four-week liquid diet. My wife had a bar-b-q sandwich (I've encouraged her to eat normal and I would let her know if it bothers me). It smelled soooo good! I went into the kitchen looking for a couple of small pieces of meat on the counter. After putting them into my mouth, I chewed a couple of times and spit it out! Never, never have I done that.

Unless someone has fought their weight as I have and others on this board, they would think I was crazy being so excited about spitting out a minuscule sized piece of meat. That action told me I can do this!

Can't wait for Feb 14th and the start of my new life!

Wow i could never imagine having pizza with my new baby stomach. The way I see it is this new stomach is like a baby and so is my digestive system too so I am looking on my list of Doctor approved post op foods as a list of "oh wow" lets see what i can have this week.

I try really hard to have my family eat like normal and I figured if the bacon didnt effect me nothing should. This is my chance of a new and healthy life and I want to do everything right that i can do I waited to long to get my approval to get my sleeve that I will make this happen.

For those not wanting to follow the surgeon post-op diet I suggest they watch TLC's my 600 lb life- Penny's story. It is very eye opening.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
