Why do people say Revision patients lose slower

Recommended Posts

Meintraining how are you? How's your journey going?

Thank you so much for asking. I'm doing ok. I still haven't lost much. I'm 5 weeks post op. I have moments where I regret having the surgery and moments that I'm fine. I think if I can just lose eventually it will help my attitude. How are you doing??? Any word yet on if you'll be approved for your RNY?

Your putting way too much pressure on urself!!! Don't be so hard on urself! That also affects ur weight loss! Also our bodies run at their own pace! As of me No word yet. I'm not surprised cause I haven't even finished the 6 month supervised diet. Which is why I don't know why my doctor said they were sending in my request for surgery

OMG I'm SOOOOO glad I stumbled across this thread!!

I was banded in 2009 and lost 157 lbs. within a year and a half. A very happy size 4 lady! But within the next six months my band betrayed me - horrible, horrible problems! Problems that made me so sick, so much of the time, that I totally FORGOT about the fact that my port used to flip upside down, and what a weird pain in the neck that was!!

I was drawn to the thread because it was about people losing more slowly after band-to-bypass revision. My band was finally removed in November, and my byass surgery was February 10, 2014. I think I had lost 25 pounds between my pre-surgery diet until my one month check-up with the band. In the 5 weeks since my bypass I have lost 16 pounds. And honestly, I'm not eating more than 600 calories a day, AND I am following every recommendation my doctor gave me.

My doctor promised me that since I was an "ideal" bandster, I'd be an even better bypasser! But he did say the weight would probably come off slower, if for no other reason than my smart body has been on this up and down roller coaster too many times to be tricked into rapid weight loss again!

So glad I've found you! And so glad to be rid of that band, slower weight loss or not. There has NEVER been a time in the past six weeks where anything made me throw up, or nauseous, or "stuck," or heartburn, or gird, or anything else. So I'll lose slowly but never have all those life-destroying side effects. AMEN!

Doer so glad you found us too! Sorry to hear of your trouble with the band. I had no trouble with mine except minimal weight loss but my hubby nearly lost his life from it or from the surgeons lack of care. His port and band were infected and eroded causing a hole where it was placed. Fortunately his organs grew up around the hole and wrapped themselves around it preventing sepsis. He was so sick. Glad to hear your doing well :-). Welcome!

I've been reading a lot of posts that state revision patients lose slower. Is this your experience? Why do you think revision patients lose slower? What is the science behind it. I just don't understand why I wouldn't have the same results as any other RNY patient.

I'm losing slower because I had already lost 30+ with the first surgery.

I can relate to a lot of these issues. I never had an issue with the port (sounds like sloppy surgery on the doctors side), but I have definitely had some issues.

Got the lap band about 4 years ago at 375lbs. Lost maybe 35lbs from the band and another 50lbs from hard work, dedication, and about 1 ½ hours in the gym daily bringing me to 290. A lady in my doctor’s office (she is no longer working there) was giving me blind fills (they normally place us under the xray to see how we swallow and if we are too tight). Obviously I was too tight, had bad acid reflux one night, some went into my lungs. My doctor unfilled me a bit, I then went to NY for a month (I live in NC). Stomach was irritated and band slipped, went to ER in NY where they took all Fluid out. Went back home to my doctor, they had me unfilled for 4 months. Ravenous hunger and a little depression ensued and I gained weight back and plateaued at 324. Had a few other issues similar to the above where the band would get irritated causing pain/discomfort. The take away is that the band stopped working, I am still at 324 and about to have my info submitted to insurance for a revision to the sleeve.

A more recent complication is where I said enough was enough with the band. The band can often cause pressure in the stomach/esophagus area causing acid reflux. I never have heartburn, but one night it appears I had “silent” acid reflux which cause swelling in the back of my tongue and voice box. The swelling was very weird, at times I would be sleeping and how I was breathing would irritate it and I would wake up with that area quivering/shaking (this has since gone away). I get the lump in my throat feeling ever so often. Doctor put me on protonix temporarily to reduce acid and allow stomach irritation to go down. I went to a throat doctor who looked at the swelling in my throat and said to stay on the protonix and allow about three months for the swelling in my throat to go down (it takes some time for it to heal I guess), but the swelling was consistent with acid reflux flare up’s that get into the throat.

I said above that I will be submitting to insurance for the sleeve, but I am still considering gastric bypass. Just not sure which is the better option for me.

I think what I hated most of the Lapband was the acid reflux and heartburn!!! That's one of the reasons why I want to do the gastric bypass myself!

I loved that I lost so much weight (157 pounds). It was seriously fun to be a size 4 again. But I hate that I had to become essentially BULIMIC to do it! Throwing up, heartburn, GIRD, reflux, the whole deal was unlivable after a few years, skinny or not! I never slept, and can't remember a day when I didn't throw up a bunch of times.

William, sorry to hear your having so much trouble with the band. What a great job you did working out and getting the weight off. Soon you'll be experiencing the same success again.

Just got approved for Roux en Y... nothing but trouble with my band since I got in 2008. Actually looking forward to the revision! I just hope I don't have as many issues with the bypass as I've had with my band...

Congratulations! I had my revision from band to rny this month. The surgery recovery was way easier in my experience. So glad I did it!!

I had lapband in 2008 and lost all my weight 125lbs in 9 months. Did so awesome with it I had all my plastics done.. Then a couple months ago bam I couldn't keep anything down.. Kept getting little unfills no relief and finally had to get the lapband removed and bypass on May 21,2014. My doc said most bands are failing after 5 years. He won't even put them in anymore, he said it's unethical knowing the failure rate. I was self pay for all the above so was very saddened I had to do a revision but saying that omg what a difference. I can drink fluids easily!! What a joy that is lol! I had to gain 50 to be eligible to have the bypass surgery.. What a mind f*ck that was. After being thin and being terrified of ruining my Tummy Tuck. All is well. I lost 20 in first week but have been stalled for 4 days. Saw the doc yesterday to have my stitches removed (skin to tight for glue from tummy tuck) he said I would lose much slower than others since most revision patients lose slower especially those who did well with previous lapband. I can hardly wait to get this weight off so I can fit back in my clothes lol trying to not be discouraged but man I was so pissed this morning to see the same damn number again! I picked it up and threw it lol it thankfully still works just a little cracked. Hahaha

It has something to do with hormones that are released during surgery which cause a rapid weight loss. Since this is a revision those hormones have already been released. I'm still trying to research this though.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
