Are pain killers different for you now?

Recommended Posts

I've been having major issues with my back and other things lately and I am not getting any relief from Oxy, Naproxin or Tramadol but Codeinne still helps. Has anyone else experienced this or has anyone been told that pain meds will work differently with a little stomach? I know we arent suppossed to take Naproxen anymore but I was desperate and it used to help somewhat- now nothing. I know we can take Tylenol but its always been too mild for my back when its at its worst.

TIA

Oops I took naproxen the other day. I do notice I don't need a higher dose if a medics before it was like 3 500mg of Tylenol now it's only one 500mg and I'm good.

Barring a specific recommendation from your surgeon, NSAIDs are just fine for sleevers. RNY patients are the ones who shouldn't take NSAIDs.

I thought I had read again and again we shouldnt take them either. I did ask my surgeon, I told him I relied on them a lot and didnt know what I would do without them and he said just wait 4 months. Now I have a PCP and he agreed with no NSAIDS but he isnt a Bariatric specialist either. Anyway the 3 times I have taken them since I was over 4 months they havent done a thing for me.

If I cant find something that works for me besides Codeinne I may have to re-consider having my back fused. Blech, and that still leaves me with Sciatica that needs relief sometimes.

When can we go back to ibuprofen? I used to take 800mg a day for my back pain and I miss it terribly.

I was told we're not supposed to take NSAIDS due to the fact that they can cause ulcers in anybody but with our stomachs being so small, there us less room for us to develop an ulcer. We were told we could take it vert, very sparingly but definitely not regularly.

When you have questions about medications, talk to your surgeon. The internet is not the right place to get medical advice.

I am permanently disabled due to an upper back injury - I take Norco, Lyrica, soma, and oxycodone. The way my body metabolizes these drugs has definitely changed since surgery. The doses are the same, but the effect doesn't last as long. That has been a real issue for me.

Vegasneon- When were you sleeved? I ask because I had spine fusion surgery four years ago (L1-L5) and am still dealing with increasing pain with any activity. My back surgeon and primary doctor have both told me that my weight is a definite factor so I had the sleeve 12/2 and am waiting for another 50+ lbs to come off before considering any more treatments. I do take hydrocodone 10/325 which relieves a lot of the daily pain.

Have you tried steroid injections? I had them prior to surgery and then again six months ago. I wouldn't say they're a cure-all but it definitely alleviates some pain.

Hope you find some relief.

Mary

I respectfully disagree. I am asking for other patients personal experience, therefore this is the correct place- a forum for VGS patients to share thier opinions.

Thank you, that was useful info. I would have guessed that meds would work better for us now but I guess not! I'll have to ask/research those first 3. In all these years I have only been prescribed oxycodone, hydrocodone, codienne & percoset & Tramadol. I think the first 4 of those are pretty much the same thing.

I was sleeved over 6 months ago. I probably wasnt clear that I turned down fusion surgery but now wonder if I should re-examine that option. I wouldnt do it until I was at goal weight for awhile if I still have all the same problems then. I'm not real hopeful though because it started when I was 17 and has been the same through many different weights. It seems from people I know, thin or fat that fusion seems to be hit or miss regarding relief.

Hydrocodone 10 used to work for me too but now does nothing. Its very weird. I never did have steroid injections- thanks for that idea. I see a new Dr next month for back & neck issues so I will ask about that.

Thank you all

Please tell me the 3500 of Tylenol was taken throughout entire day and not all a once or multiple times a day? 4000mg is the max daily divided dose for Tylenol. It is extremely toxic to the liver.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
